Selector Mechanism
Removing
- Remove the shift knob and the shift lever boot. Refer to => [ Shift Knob with Shift Lever Boot ] Shift Knob with Shift Lever Boot.
- Remove the ashtray in the front of the center console.
- Remove the noise insulation over the shift mechanism.
- Remove nuts - arrows -.
- Remove the entire air filter housing.
- Remove the selector cable washer - 1 - and pull the cable off the pin.
Metal Selector Relay Lever:
- Remove the selector cable washer - 2 - from the selector relay lever and pull the cable off the pin.
Plastic Selector Relay Lever:
• To avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable retainer must be disconnected from the selector lever before removal.
- Pull the securing mechanism forward as far as the stop in the direction of - arrow 1 - and then unlock to the left in the direction of - arrow 2 -.
- Press the relay lever forward direction of - arrow 3 -.
• The cable retainer may only be removed with the relay lever removed. Refer to=> [ Pry the Selector Cable Retainer Out of the Plastic Relay Lever. ] 02Q Manual Transmission
All Vehicles
- Remove cable mounting bracket from transmission - arrows -.
- Remove front crossmember for underbody - arrows -.
• To prevent damage, decoupling element of the front exhaust pipe must never be angled by more than 10°.
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamping sleeve - 1 -.
- Remove bracket for exhaust system - arrows -.
- Tie up the front exhaust pipe to the underbody.
- Remove the underbody rear crossmember - nuts 1 and 2 -.
• To remove the rear section of the exhaust system, a second technician will be required.
- Disengage exhaust system at retaining loops - arrows -.
- Detach rear muffler on retaining loops and remove rear section of exhaust system.
- Loosen the clip - arrows - and remove the heat shield together with the shift mechanism.
Install the Shift Mechanism.
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Install the shift mechanism and tighten the nuts - arrows -. Tightening specification - item 16 - => [ (Item 16) Nut ] Shift Mechanism From MY 2008 Overview.
- Route the cables - 1 - from the shift mechanism - 2 - to the transmission as follows:
• The cables must run parallel to each other and must not intersect.
• The cables must be routed in the provided recesses in the heat shield - 3 -.
• The enlargement shows the heat shield from above.
A clip - A - holds the cables and heat shield to each other in place.
- Attach the cable mounting bracket to the transmission - arrows -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 9) Bolt ] 02Q Transmission.
- Apply a small amount of grease (G 000 450 02) on the pins - arrows - of the transmission shift lever - 1 - and the relay lever - 2 -.
- Replace the lock washer - 3 - and, with the metal relay lever - 2 -, the lock washer - 4 - after each disassembly.
- Secure shift cable with retaining disc - 3 - and selector cable with retaining disc - 4 -.
Cable Retainer with Plastic Relay Lever
- The relay lever and cable retainer must be installed together. Refer to => [ From 05.2007 - Plastic Relay Lever ] 02Q Manual Transmission.
- Insert the selector cable in the cable retainer.

- Adjust the selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
- Install exhaust system and align it free of tension.
- Install the complete air filter housing.
- Install the ashtray in the front of the center console.
- Install the shift knob and shift lever boot. Refer to => [ Shift Knob with Shift Lever Boot ] Shift Knob with Shift Lever Boot.
