Selector Mechanism with Cable
• The selector mechanism and the selector lever cable cannot be separated from each other. Both are removed at the same time.
• After installation, the selector lever cable movement must be checked and adjusted.
Removing
- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.
- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle. Disconnect the connector - 2 - from the cover while doing this.
- Remove the center console.
- Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness connector - 1 - from the selector mechanism.
- Remove the engine cover, if necessary.
- Remove the complete air filter housing.
- Remove the lock washers - A and B -. The lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting the cable.
Loosen the adjustment bolt - arrow -.
• Use pliers to remove the lock washer - B -. Do not use a sharp edged tool. Otherwise the selector lever cable could get damaged.
• If necessary, remove the cable bracket - 2 - and selector lever cable from the transmission. Remove the bolts - 1 - and the lock washer - 3 -.
• Replace the bolts - 1 - and the lock washers.
• Bolt - 1 - tightening specification, see item 7 in => [ Selector Mechanism ] Selector Mechanism.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Remove the front and rear tunnel bridges from the body.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.
- Disengage the center and rear mufflers from the suspended mounts and secure them to the body with wire.
- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the selector mechanism.
• A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.
- Remove the nuts - arrows - in the vehicles interior.
- Remove the bracket - A -, if equipped.
- Remove the selector mechanism - B - with the selector lever cable and selector housing downward.
• The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.
• To do this, remove the 4 bolts.
• Then remove the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable inside the passenger compartment in the - direction of the arrow -.
• The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Install in reverse order of removal.
• Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
• Do not lubricate the selector lever cable.
• For the correct tightening specifications, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism ] Selector Mechanism.
- Install the heat shield under the shift mechanism.
- Install the exhaust system free of tension.
- Install the front and rear tunnel bridges to the body.
- Install the center console.
- Install the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.
- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
- Check the selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.
- Install the complete air filter housing.
- Install the engine cover, if it was removed earlier.
