• Silicone sealant (D 176 404 A)
Removing
- Remove toothed belt. Refer to --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning.
- Remove toothed belt crankshaft sprocket. Secure toothed belt sprocket with counterhold tool (3415).
- Remove oil pan. Refer to --> [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
- Unbolt sealing flange belt pulley side.
- Remove sealing flange. If necessary, loosen it by tapping lightly with a rubber mallet.
- Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.
CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.
- Remove sealant residue on the sealing flange using a rotating brush such as a drill with a plastic brush attachment.
- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.
Installing
• Note the expiration date of the sealant.
• The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 3 mm).
• The sealing compound bead must not be thicker than 2-3 mm or the excess compound could enter the oil pan and block the oil suction pipe strainer. It could also drip onto the sealing surface of the crankshaft seal.
• Before applying the bead of sealant, cover the sealing surface of the seal with a clean rag.
- Apply silicone sealant to the clean sealing surface of the sealing flange as illustrated. The sealing compound bead must be:
• 2 to 3 mm thick
• And run on inside of bolt holes - arrows -
- Install sealing flange immediately and tighten all bolts lightly.
• To position sealing flange with sealing ring installed, use guide sleeve (T10053/1).
- Tighten sealing flange bolts in a diagonal sequence:
• Tightening specifications, refer to --> [ item 7, 15 Nm ] Service and Repair.
- Install crankshaft toothed belt sprocket:
• Tightening specifications, refer to --> [ item 2, 120 Nm plus an additional / turn (90°) ] Toothed Belt Drive Assembly Overview.
- Install oil pan. Refer to --> [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
• After installing, allow the sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be replenished.
- Install and tension the toothed belt. Refer to --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning.
