Oil Pan: Service and Repair






Oil Pan

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

SW 10 hex ball socket (VAS 3185)

Multi-point socket (T10058)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782)

Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

Protective eyewear

Flat scraper

Silicone sealant (D 176 404 A2)

Removing

- Remove insulation pan.

- Drain engine oil.

Observe disposal regulations!

- Install insulation on the oil pan.

- Remove bolts connecting oil pan and transmission.

- Remove oil pan.

- Loosen oil pan with light blows of a rubber headed hammer if necessary.

- Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.

CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.

- Remove sealant residue on the oil pan using a rotating brush such as a drill with a plastic brush attachment.





- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

Note the expiration date of the sealant.

The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.

- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 3 mm).





The sealant bead must not be thicker than 2 to 3 mm or excess sealant could get into oil pan and clog the oil intake pipe strainer.

- Apply silicone sealant, as shown, to clean oil pan sealing surface. The sealing compound bead must be:

2 to 3 mm thick

Run around inside of bolt holes - arrows -

- Apply silicone sealant to the clean oil pan sealing surfaces as illustrated. (The illustration shows the location of the sealant bead on the cylinder block.)





- Position the oil pan immediately and tighten the bolts connecting the oil pan and transmission and all of the oil pan bolts. Make sure the oil pan lies flush on the intermediate plate/transmission flange.

When installing the oil pan to a removed engine, make sure that the oil pan is positioned flush with the cylinder block on the flywheel side.

- Tighten oil pan bolts in a diagonal sequence.

Tightening specifications: --> [ (item 23) 15 Nm ] Oil Pump, Oil Pan and Balance Shaft Module.

- Tighten oil pan/cylinder block bolts.

Tightening specifications: --> [ (item 21) 40 Nm ] Oil Pump, Oil Pan and Balance Shaft Module.

- Tighten oil pan/transmission bolts.

Tightening specifications: --> [ (item 22) 45 Nm ] Oil Pump, Oil Pan and Balance Shaft Module.

After installing the oil pan, allow the sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be replenished.

Further installation is in reverse order.
