Transmission Replacement (2.0L LHU)

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Battery Tray Replacement.
2. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
4. Remove the front bumper. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement Service and Repair.
5. Remove the front compartment insulator. Refer to Front Compartment Insulator Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Remove the 3 way catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L LEA) Three-Way Catalytic Converter ReplacementThree-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.0L LHU) Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement.
7. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill Service and Repair.
8. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the transmission control module (TCM), then unclip the connector from the transmission.
9. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe from the transmission. 10. Remove the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (2.4L LEA) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (2.0L LHU) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
11. Plug and/or cap the pipes and the transmission to prevent contamination.
12. Remove the wiring harness starter motor from the transmission.
13. Remove the transmission vent hose.
14. Remove the 2 upper transmission bolts (1).
15. Raise the vehicle.
16. Remove the drivetrain and the front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement Service and Repair.
17. Disconnect the left front wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
18. Remove the front wheel drive intermediate shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
19. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear (2.4L LEA) Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - RearTransmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear (2.0L LHU) Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
20. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
21. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L LEA) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (2.0L LHU) Service and Repair.
22. If equipped, remove the access cover from the transmission.
23. Remove and DISCARD the flex plate to the torque converter bolts (1).
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Install the engine support fixture.
26. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
27. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
28. Raise the vehicle.
29. Position a suitable transmission jack under the transmission.
30. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack using suitable straps or chains.
31. Remove the 4 transmission bolts (1, 2, 3) and remove the cover (4).
32. Remove the 2 transmission bolts (1)
Note: Ensure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.
33. Separate the transmission from the engine.
34. Lower the transmission from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. If the removed transmission will be reinstalled, re-cut the 3 threads of torque converter.
2. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and position the transmission to the engine.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
3. Install the 2 transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
4. Install the transmission bolts (1, 2, 3) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
5. Remove the transmission jack.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Raise the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture.
8. Install the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts but do not tighten yet.
9. Raise the vehicle.
Note: Service may offer bolts that are not microencapsulated. If this is the case apply thread lock agent to the bolts.
If fasteners are microencapsulated, install NEW torque converter to flywheel bolts. DO NOT reuse the old bolts.
10. Install the 3 NEW flex plate to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
11. If equipped, install the access cover to the transmission.
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L LEA) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (2.0L LHU) Service and Repair.
13. Install the transmission rear mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear (2.4L LEA) Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - RearTransmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear (2.0L LHU) Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
14. Install the transmission front mount to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
15. Install the front wheel drive intermediate shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
16. Install the left front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
17. Install the drivetrain and the front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement Service and Repair.
18. Install the 2 upper transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
19. Remove the engine support fixture.
20. Tighten the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
21. Remove the engine support fixture.
22. Raise the vehicle.
23. Install the wiring harness starter motor to the transmission.
24. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (2.4L LEA) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (2.0L LHU) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
25. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (2.4L LEA) Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (2.0L LHU) Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement.
26. Install the 3 way catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L LEA) Three-Way Catalytic Converter ReplacementThree-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.0L LHU) Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement.
27. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the transmission control module (TCM), then connect the wiring harness to transmission.
28. Install the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.
29. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector lever cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment.
30. Install the transmission vent hose.
31. Fill the transmission with the correct fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill Service and Repair.
32. Install the front bumper. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement Service and Repair.
33. Install the front compartment insulator. Refer to Front Compartment Insulator Replacement Service and Repair.
34. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Battery Tray Replacement.
