Differential: Description and Operation
Differential Assembly Overview
• Attach transmission to assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand ] Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand.
• Adjust differential. Refer to => [ Adjusting the Differential ] Adjusting the Differential when replacing tapered roller bearing, differential housing, transmission housing and clutch housing.
• Always replace both tapered roller bearings together as a set.
• Heat inner race of tapered roller bearing to 100 °C / 212 °F before installing.

• For the differential

3 Outer Race For Tapered Roller Bearing
• Pulling out, refer to => [ Pulling Outer Race for Tapered Roller Bearing Out of Transmission Housing ] Differential
• Installing, refer to => [ Pressing Outer Race for Tapered Roller Bearing into Transmission Housing ] Differential
4 Tapered Roller Bearing Inner Race
• Pulling off, refer to => [ Pulling Off Inner Race for Tapered Roller Bearing ] Differential
• Pressing on, refer to => [ Pressing On Tapered Roller Bearing Inner Race ] Differential
5 Differential Housing
• With the final drive gear riveted on
• Mounting - arrow - for right tapered roller bearing with insert of right flange shaft, approximately 28 mm longer
6 Tapered Roller Bearing Inner Race
• Pulling off, refer to => [ Pulling Off Inner race for Tapered Roller Bearing ] Differential
• Transmission with right stub shaft: Pressing on, refer to => [ Transmission with Right Stub Shaft: Pressing On Tapered Roller Bearing Inner Race ] Differential
• Transmission with right flange shaft: Pressing on, refer to => [ Transmission with Right Flange Shaft: Pressing On Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing ] Differential
7 Outer Race For Tapered Roller Bearing
• Pulling out, refer to => [ Pulling Outer Race of Tapered Roller Bearing Out of Clutch Housing ] Differential
• Installing, refer to => [ Pressing Outer Race for Tapered Roller Bearing Into Clutch Housing ] Differential
8 Adjustment Shim
• 0.65 mm thick
• Installation position: Shoulder on inner diameter faces toward seal - item 14 - => [ (Item 14) Stub Shaft Seal ]
9 Clutch Housing
10 O-ring
• Replace
11 Protective Ring
• Can be pulled off and pushed on to stub shaft by hand
12 Countersunk Bolt - 33 Nm
• Screw together with threaded piece - item 26 - => [ (Item 26) Threaded Piece ]
13 Stub Shaft
• As of transmission build date 01 11 4, replaced by the flange shaft - item 15 - => [ (Item 15) Right Drive Flange ]
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog
14 Stub Shaft Seal
• Through transmission build date 31 10 4
• Replace with transmission installed, refer to => [ Right Stub Shaft Seal, through Transmission Build Date 31 10 4, Replacing ] Right Stub Shaft Seal, Through Transmission Build Date 31 10 4, Replacing
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog
15 Right Drive Flange
• Replaces stub shaft from transmission build date 01 11 4 - item 13 - => [ (Item 13) Stub Shaft ]
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog
16 Protective Ring
• Pry off the protective ring from the flange shaft - item 15 - => [ (Item 15) Right Drive Flange ] using a screwdriver alternating from side to side.
• Press on protective ring until stop by hand
• Protective ring must engage with flange shaft
17 Oil Seal
• For flange shaft - item 15 - => [ (Item 15) Right Drive Flange ]
• Replacing with transmission installed, refer to => [ Right Flange Shaft Seal, from Transmission Build Date 01 11 4, Replacing ] Right Flange Shaft Seal, from Transmission Build Date 01 11 4, Replacing
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog
18 Spring for Flange Shaft or Stub Shaft
• Installed behind flange shaft and stub shaft
19 Thrust Washer
• Installation position: Collar to compression spring, braces (if installed) to tapered ring
20 Tapered Ring
• Installation position: differential housing taper
21 Securing Ring
• Holds tapered ring, thrust washer and spring in position with flange shaft and stub shaft removed
22 Large Differential Pinion
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Bevel Gears ] Differential
23 Differential Taper Axle
• Drive out using drift
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Bevel Gears ] Differential
24 Spring Pin
• To secure differential planetary gear axle
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Removing and Installing Roll Pin for Differential Bevel Gear Axle ] Differential
25 Small Differential Gear
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Bevel Gears ] Differential
26 Threaded Piece
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Bevel Gears ] Differential
27 Thrust Washer Retainer
• Install coated with gear oil
28 Protective Ring
• Pry out protective ring using a screwdriver alternately
• Installation position: Depression points away from threaded holes in flanged shaft
• Press on protective ring until stop by hand
• Protective ring must engage with flange shaft
29 Flange Shaft
30 Flange Shaft Seal
• Replace with transmission installed, refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft Seal ] Left Flange Shaft Seal
