Turbocharger and Boost Pressure Regulator Valve, Checking
Turbocharger and Boost Pressure Regulator Valve, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Turbocharger Tester (V.A.G 1397 A)
• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing, And Information System (VAS 5051 A)
Test Conditions
• Make sure all hoses and lines fit securely and do not leak.
• DTC memory checked, output diagnostic test mode performed.
Test Sequence
CAUTION!
• Test and measuring equipment must always be secured to the rear seat and be operated from there by a second person.
• If test and measuring instruments are operated from the front passenger's seat and the vehicle is involved in an accident, there is a possibility that the person sitting in this seat may receive serious injuries when the airbag is triggered.
- Connect the T-shaped piece and hose of the Turbocharger Test Device (V.A.G 1397 A) to the front of the intake manifold.
- Guide test hose over rear corner of hood and through right window into vehicle interior.
- Switch the turbocharger tester on and move the measuring range switch to position - I - (absolute pressure).
- Connect the measuring hose to the connector - I -.
• The hose lines must not have any leaks or the measurements will be incorrect.
• Make sure the measuring hose is not pinched at the hood or the side window.
• Press the memory button "M" on the turbocharger test to save the last measured value until the next time the memory button " M" is pressed or the tester is switched off.
• The storage is indicated by blinking commas in the display field.
• If the turbocharger test device battery voltage falls below the permitted level, an arrow appears in the upper left corner of the display.
• Quickly drive at least 3 km before testing the vehicle (without traffic light stops and the like).
• A second technician is required because the indicated values must be read out during vehicle operation.
- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 A) to the Data Link connector (DLC) with the ignition switched off.
- Start engine.
Display on (VAS 5051 A):
- Press button "On-Board Diagnostics".
Display on (VAS 5051 A):
- In selection - 1 -, press vehicle system " 01 - Engine electronics".
- Wait until next display appears.
Display on (VAS 5051 A):
- In selection - 1 -, click on the diagnostic function " 08 - Read measuring value block".
Display on (VAS 5051 A):
1 Enter the display group, maximum input value = 225
- In the button field - 2 - enter the "display group number 115" and the press the Q button to confirm.
- Perform test drive.
- Accelerate vehicle in 3rd gear at full throttle from 2000 RPM and watch tachometer.
- At approximately 2,500 RPM press the Print button on (VAS 5051 A) and the memory button - M - on (V.A.G 1397 A) at the same time.
• The charge pressure level should be determined with the Turbocharger Tester (V.A.G 1397 A). The Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 A) is for checking if the charge pressure is also be recorded in the control module.
Display on (V.A.G 1397 A):
• Specified value: 1.500 to 1.600 bar positive pressure.
Display on (VAS 5051 A):
- Check reading in display field - 4 -.
• Specified value: 1500 to 1600 mbar.
If the specification is not obtained:
* If the charge pressure becomes too high, the fuel supply will be switched off to protect the engine. The engine has misfires at higher RPMs.
