Handling
Handling non-deployed SRS-components
Non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS components must not be deployed or ignited inside the vehicle.
Warning! For destruction of non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS components, see Discarding pyrotechnic components Discarding Pyrotechnic Components.
The SRS component is to be removed as specified in the instructions below.
Remove:
- driver's airbag (SRS) as described in Driver's airbag Driver's Airbag
- front passenger airbag (SRS) as described in Airbag, passenger side Airbag, Passenger Side
- seat airbag (SIPS) as described in Air bag, front seat Air Bag, Front Seat
- impact curtain (IC) according to: Inflatable curtain Inflatable Curtain
- front seatbelt pre-tensioner according to: Front safety belt retractor Front Safety Belt Retractor
- rear seatbelt pre-tensioner according to: Seat belt retractor, rear Seat Belt Retractor, Rear
- the supplemental restraint system module (SRS) as described in Air bag supplemental restraint system Service and Repair
- the steering wheel as described in Steering wheel Removal and Replacement
- the inertia reel/steering wheel module (SWM) as described in Steering wheel control module Service and Repair.
Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS component. There is a risk of the seat belt tensioner deploying.
Warning! A pyrotechnical SRS component must never be unscrewed, repaired or transferred to another vehicle.
Storage and transport
Storing and transporting non-deployed SRS components
During temporary storage of the driver's airbag (SRS), it is to be placed with the metal side (rear side) down on a well protected surface so that the surface material is not damaged.
Note! For longer storage periods (unattended storage) the driver and passenger air bags (SRS), side air curtains (IC), seat air bag modules (SIPS), seat belt tensioners and other SRS units must be stored at a dedicated site in the original packaging.
Warning! In the event of a fire at the storage site, the fire authorities must be informed about the presence of pyrotechnical SRS components according to the relevant national statutory requirements.
Note! Loose side air curtains are always to be stored in IC brackets or other approved packaging.
Note! Driver and passenger air bags (SRS), side air curtains (IC), seat air bag modules (SIPS), seat belt tensioners and other SRS units must not be exposed to temperatures above 110°C.
During transport, driver and passenger air bags (SRS), side air curtains (IC), seat air bag modules (SIPS) and other pyrotechnical SRS units must be handled in accordance with the national regulations for each country.
