Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Handling
Handling non-deployed SRS-components
Non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS components must not be deployed or ignited inside the vehicle.
Warning! For destruction of non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS components, see Discarding pyrotechnic components Discarding Pyrotechnic Components.
The SRS component is to be removed as specified in the instructions below.
Remove:
- driver's airbag (SRS) as described in Driver's airbag Driver's Airbag
- front passenger airbag (SRS) as described in Airbag, passenger side Airbag, Passenger Side Airbag, passenger side Airbag, Passenger Side
- seat airbag (SIPS) as described in Air bag, front seat Air Bag, Front Seat Air bag, front seat Air Bag, Front Seat
- inflatable curtains (DMIC) as described in Inflatable curtain Inflatable Curtain
- anti-roll bars (ROPS) as described in Rollover Protection Unit Trim Cover Service and Repair
- the front belt tensioner as described in Front safety belt retractor Front Safety Belt Retractor
- the rear belt tensioner as described in Seat belt retractor, rear Seat Belt Retractor, Rear
- the supplemental restraint system module (SRS) as described in Air bag supplemental restraint system Service and Repair Air bag supplemental restraint system Service and Repair
- the steering wheel as described in Steering wheel Service and Repair
- the inertia reel/steering wheel module (SWM) as described in Steering wheel control module Service and Repair
- the steering column as described in Steering column Service and Repair.
For other information on the SRS system after a collision, see Handling deployed pyrotechnical part Handling Deployed Pyrotechnical Part.
Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS component. There is a risk of deployment.
Warning! A pyrotechnical SRS component must never be unscrewed, repaired or moved to another vehicle.
Storage and transport
Storing and transporting non-deployed SRS components
During temporary storage of the driver's airbag (SRS), it is to be placed with the metal side (rear side) down on a well protected surface so that the surface material is not damaged.
Note! For long-term storage (without monitoring), the driver's and front passenger airbags (SRS), inflatable curtains (DMIC), seat airbag (SIPS), anti-roll bar (ROPS), belt tensioner and other SRS components are to be stored in the original packaging at the specified location at the storage site.
Warning! In the event of a fire at the storage site, the fire authorities must be informed about the presence of pyrotechnical SRS components according to the relevant national statutory requirements.
Note! Loose inflatable curtains are always to be stored in DMIC brackets or other approved packaging.
Note! The driver's and front passenger airbags (SRS), inflatable curtains (DMIC), seat airbag (SIPS), anti-roll bar (ROPS), belt tensioner and other SRS components are not to be subjected to temperatures higher than 110 °C (230 °F).
During transport, the driver's and front passenger airbags (SRS), inflatable curtains (DMIC), seat airbag (SIPS), anti-roll bar (ROPS), belt tensioner and other SRS components are to be handled in a manner that complies with the respective country's national regulations.
