Supplementary Restraint System (SRS)
Supplementary restraint system (SRS)
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Safety equipment (Supplemental Restraint System (SRS))
Warning! The vehicle has pyrotechnical airbags and seat belt tensioners. The components in the SRS system must be treated very carefully during repair to avoid:
- personal injury when carrying out repairs
- damage to or malfunction of the SRS (supplemental restraint system) system.
Warning! Only trained personnel are to work with the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

1. The front seat belts and seat belt tensioners with seat belt reel sensors
See Front safety belt retractor Front Safety Belt Retractor and Load limiter, seat belt Service and Repair.
2. Collision sensor SRS system
The impact sensors for the SRS system are located in the front doors and the B-posts.
See Collision sensor, B-pillar Collision Sensor, B-Pillar and Collision sensor, side Collision Sensor, Side Collision sensor, side Collision Sensor, Side.
3. Driver's airbag (SRS)
The driver's airbag (SRS) inflates in two stages.
Certain tasks must be performed at the steering wheel, steering shaft and steering gear in accordance with applicable methods for work with the driver's airbag. See Driver's airbag Driver's Airbag.
4. Steering column
The steering column has a pyrotechnical pretensioner. See Steering column Service and Repair.
5 and 6. Collision sensor SRS system
See: Collision sensor Collision Sensor.
7. Passenger airbag (SRS)
The front passenger airbag (SRS) inflates in two stages.
See Airbag, passenger side Airbag, Passenger Side Airbag, passenger side Airbag, Passenger Side.
8. Supplemental restraint system control module (SRS)
The supplemental restraint system module (SRS) is between the parking brake and the gear selector lever in the center console.
Warning! Never install vehicle accessories on or near the supplemental restraint system module (SRS).
See Air bag supplemental restraint system Service and Repair Air bag supplemental restraint system Service and Repair.
9. Occupant weight sensor (OWS)
The occupant weight sensor (OWS) is housed in the foam of the front passenger seat cushion. See Front passenger weight sensor Removal and Replacement.
10. Seat track sensor (STS)
The seat location sensor (STS) is a magnetic sensor that detects the position of the seat. See Front seat position sensor Front Seat Position Sensor.
11. Belt tensioner sensor (BTS)
12. Airbag module seat (SIPS)
See Air bag, front seat Air Bag, Front Seat Air bag, front seat Air Bag, Front Seat.
13. Buckle seat belt
See Front safety belt buckle Front Safety Belt Buckle and Safety belt buckle, rear Safety Belt Buckle, Rear.
14. Rear seat belts with seat belt tensioners
See Seat belt retractor, rear Seat Belt Retractor, Rear.
15. Inflatable curtain (DMIC)
The inflatable curtain (DMIC) consists of two inflatable protective curtains housed in the top edge of the front door panels - one on each side of the vehicle.
The curtain covers the front side of the vehicle interior from the A-post to the B-post.
See Inflatable curtain Inflatable Curtain.
16. Anti-roll bar (ROPS)
The anti-roll bar (ROPS) is a pyrotechnical safety system in which two protective anti-roll bars automatically extend if the vehicle rolls or overturns. These are located behind the rear headrestraint. See Safety cassette (ROPS) Service and Repair.
17. Other SRS components
Whiplash system
The front seats are equipped with an anti-whiplash function.
This function reduces the risk of whiplash injury in the event of a collision.
The system is fully mechanical and is integrated in the seats.
Wiring
The SRS wiring is orange.
When working on SRS wiring, extra care must be taken to avoid damage to the following areas:
- the soundproofing panels
- the glove compartment
- the dashboard
- the steering shaft covers
- the steering column
- the ignition switch
- the sills
- the A and B-posts
- the front side plate (front impact sensor)
- the anti-roll bar (ROPS)
- the front doors.
Data Link Connector (DLC)
The data link connector (DLC) is in the passenger compartment.
Decals
Safety decals must always be in place in the vehicle. For further information, see Positioning safety labels Positioning safety labels .
