Front Seat Belts

Front Seat Belts

Be sure to check the high-voltage system for possible damage after a seat belt has been replaced because the seat belt tensioner fired.

Visually inspect for mechanical damage.

Testing using the "Guided Fault Finding".

Removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle is described here. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

The general safety precautions for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components) must be observed => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.

Follow the special information regarding belt tensioners => [ Belt Tensioner Special Instructions ] Belt Tensioner Special Instructions.

- Move the seat as far forward as possible..

- Disconnect the vehicle battery.

- Remove the belt anchor at the front seat. Refer to => [ Front Seat Belt Anchor ] Front Seat Belt Anchor.

- Remove the B-pillar trim. Refer to => [ B-Pillar Trim ] B-Pillar Trim.

- Remove the sill panel strip. Refer to => [ Sill Panel Trims ] Sill Panel Trims.

- Unscrew the bolt - 1 - (50 Nm) and detach the belt relay - 2 - from the belt height adjuster.

- Remove the bolts - 1 - and then remove the belt guide - 2 -.

Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the belt tensioner. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.

- Disconnect the wiring harness from the automatic belt retractor.

- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Remove the automatic belt retractor - 3 - from the B-pillar.

Installation

- Install the automatic belt retractor - 3 - in the B-pillar.

- Bolt the automatic belt retractor at the upper mounting point with the bolt - 2 - (4.5 Nm).

It must be ensured that the anti-twist mechanism engages fully in the body opening.

- Bolt the automatic belt retractor at the lower mounting point with the bolt - 1 - (50 Nm).

- Install in reverse order of removal.

It must be ensured that there are no electric cables in the belt retraction area!

- Connect the vehicle battery.

In the case of vehicles with "PR no. 4QE", the front seat belts are each equipped with a reversible belt tensioner.

If a front seat belt with a reversible belt tensioner is replaced, operate the control module integrated in the automatic belt retractor via "guided fault finding". Refer to => [ Reversible Belt Tensioners, Replacing Control Module using Guided Fault Finding ] Reversible Belt Tensioners, Replacing Control Module using Guided Fault Finding.
