Camshaft Adjuster






Camshaft Adjuster

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Socket (T40080)

Camshaft Clamp (T10252)

Toothed Belt Tensioner (T10020)

Locking Pin (T10115)

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Removing

- Remove the high pressure pump. Refer to => [ High Pressure Pump ] High Pressure Pump.

- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.

- Remove the refrigerant hoses - 1 and 2 -, remove the bolt - 3 - and loosen the coolant pipe from the heat shield.






- Remove the wire bracket bolt - arrow -.






- Remove the vacuum pump.

- Remove the housing bolts - arrows - from the camshaft adjuster.






- Bring the mark on the camshaft sprocket to alignment with the mark on the toothed belt guard. The notches in the camshafts - arrows - now face toward each other vertically.






- Install the camshaft clamp (T10252) as shown and secure using the bolts - arrows -.






- Loosen the bolt from the camshaft adjuster using the socket (T40080).

- Press the chain tensioner together - arrow A - and secure it using the locking pin (T10115) - arrow B -.






- Remove the bolt from the camshaft adjuster and remove it with the chain.

Installing

Camshafts are secured using the camshaft clamp (T10252).






- Lay the chain onto the camshaft adjuster.

- Hold the camshaft adjuster in front of the exhaust camshaft so that the notch - A - and the pin - B - are positioned across from one another.






- With the chain in this position, first route it on the intake camshaft sprocket at the top - arrow -.






- Rotate the intake camshaft in the - direction of arrow A - slowly using the toothed belt tensioner (T10020) until the camshaft adjuster fits on the camshaft.






If the pin does not fit into the notch: Remove it and lay the new chain on top.

- Use the socket (T40080) to tighten the new bolt. Tightening specification: 20 Nm + an additional 45° (1/8) turn.

- Remove the locking pin (T10115) - arrow B -.






Further installation is in the reverse order of removal.

- Install the vacuum pump. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head and Cover Overview ] Cylinder Head and Cover Overview.

- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.

- Install the high pressure pump. Refer to => [ High Pressure Pump ] High Pressure Pump.
