Differential: Description and Operation
Differential Overview
• Heat the inner race/tapered roller bearing to 100 °C (212 °F) before installing.
• Replace both tapered roller bearings together.
• Adjust the differential, refer to => [ Adjustment Overview ] Adjustment Overview when replacing the tapered roller bearing, differential housing, transmission housing and/or clutch housing.
1 Transmission Housing
2 Adjusting Shim
• For the differential.
• To select the correct thickness, refer to => [ Differential, Adjusting ] Differential, Adjusting.
3 Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing
• Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing from the Transmission Housing ] Service and Repair.
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing into the Transmission Housing ] Service and Repair.
4 Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing
• Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Bearing Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing ] Service and Repair.
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Bearing Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing ] Service and Repair.
5 Differential Housing
• With the final drive gear.
• Thrust washer union fitted to differential housing, refer to => [ On some Transmissions, the Thrust Washer Union has a Ridge. ] Service and Repair.
• Roll pin hole adapted to the length of the roll pin, refer to => [ Allocation, Differential Housing ] Service and Repair.
• Allocate according to the Parts Catalog
6 Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing
• Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Bearing Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing ] Service and Repair.
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Bearing Inner Race/Tapered Roller Bearing ] Service and Repair.
7 Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing
• Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing from the Clutch Housing ] Service and Repair.
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Outer Race/Tapered Roller Bearing into the Clutch Housing ] Service and Repair.
8 Clutch Housing
9 Sleeve
• For installing the seal - item 10 -
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Transmission and Clutch Housings ] Transmission and Clutch Housings.
10 Seal
• Left flange shaft seal, installing with the transmission installed. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft and Seal ] Left Flange Shaft and Seal.
• Right flange shaft seal, install with transmission installed. Refer to => [ Right Flange Shaft, Seal and Sleeve (Two-Piece) ] Right Flange Shaft, Seal and Sleeve (Two-Piece).
11 Seal and Sleeve (One Piece)
• If the seal is damaged, then replace both the seal and sleeve. Refer to => [ Right Flange Shaft, Seal with Sleeve (One-Piece) ] Final Drive, Differential (0A4 Manual Transmission)Right Flange Shaft, Seal With Sleeve (One-Piece).
12 Bolt
• 25 Nm
• Install with the threaded piece - item 20 -
13 Flange Shaft
• Removing and installing, refer to one of the following:
=> [ Left Flange Shaft and Seal ] Left Flange Shaft and Seal.
=> [ Right Flange Shaft, Seal with Sleeve (One-Piece) ] Final Drive, Differential (0A4 Manual Transmission)Right Flange Shaft, Seal With Sleeve (One-Piece).
=> [ Right Flange Shaft, Seal and Sleeve (Two-Piece) ] Right Flange Shaft, Seal and Sleeve (Two-Piece).
14 Flange Shaft Pressure Spring
• Installed behind the flange shaft.
15 Thrust Washer
• Installed position, refer to => [ Installed Position: Tapered Ring Thrust Washer ] Service and Repair.
16 Tapered Ring
• With grooves for the thrust washer.
• Installed position: differential housing taper.
17 Locking Ring
• Holds the tapered ring, the thrust washer and the pressure spring when the flange shaft is removed.
18 Thrust Washer Union
• Install using transmission fluid.
• The thrust washer union has a ridge on some transmissions. Refer to => [ On some Transmissions, the Thrust Washer Union has a Ridge. ] Service and Repair.
19 Large Differential Bevel Gear
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Planetary Gears and Differential Bevel Gear Axle ] Service and Repair.
20 Threaded Piece
• Installing, refer to => [ Installing the Differential Planetary Gears and Differential Bevel Gear Axle ] Service and Repair.
21 Differential Taper Axle
• Removing with a short roll pin, refer to => [ Roll Pin with Groove (short roll pin): Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.
• Removing with a long roll pin, refer to => [ Roll Pin without a Surrounding Groove (long roll pin), Removing: Press out the Differential Bevel Gear Axle ] Service and Repair.

22 Adapter Sleeve
• For securing the axle for differential bevel gears.
• Different lengths of roll pins are installed.
• Differentiating the roll pins. Refer to => [ Differentiating the Roll Pins ] Service and Repair.
• Short roll pin: Removing and installing, refer to => [ Roll Pin with Groove (short roll pin): Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.
• Long roll pin: Sheared off during removal, refer to => [ Roll Pin without a Surrounding Groove (long roll pin), Removing: Press out the Differential Bevel Gear Axle ] Service and Repair.
