Removing and Installing / Replacing Trim on Convertible Top Compartment Lid
51 17 001 - Removing and installing/replacing trim on convertible top compartment lid
Special tools required:
- 00 9 321 00 9 310 Assembly Wedges (Set in Plastic Case)
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove convertible top compartment lid Removing and installing Convertible Top Compartment Lid
- Remove seal between trim and convertible top compartment lid Removing and Installing / Replacing Middle Seal on Convertible Top Compartment Lid (Top/Connected)
Release nuts (1 and 2) on convertible top compartment lid (3).
Carefully lever trim (1) with special tool 00 9 321 00 9 310 Assembly Wedges (Set in Plastic Case) off convertible top compartment lid (2). The all-round adhesive tape tears in the process.
Important!
When levering off, avoid contact with edges on trim (1) (risk of damage).
Remove trim (1) and seal between trim and convertible top compartment lid.
Set trim (1) down on a clean surface.
Roughly remove remnants of adhesive tape (1) from convertible top compartment lid and when refitting from trim (2) with special tool 00 9 321 00 9 310 Assembly Wedges (Set in Plastic Case).
Remove remnants of adhesive layer (1) with grinding wheel (2) and adhesive remover (source reference: BMW Parts Service).
Important!
Bonding surface must be dry and free of dust and grease.
Once it has been cleaned, do not touch the adhesive area with bare hands.
Replacement:
If necessary, fit new seals on convertible top compartment lid on left or right Removing and Installing / Replacing Left or Right Seal on Convertible Top Compartment Lid.
When refitting:
Use template (2) provided to attach adhesive tape (1) (ingress of water).
Use template (2) for left and right sides (turn round).
Installation:
Place template (2) over prepunched holes (3) and straight edge (4) in direction of travel and secure in position.
Stick on adhesive tape (1) so that it is flush with seal at front left/right (2).
Note:
Max. 1 mm gap.
Pull off liner (protective strip for adhesive surface).
Stick double-sided adhesive tape (1) on trim (4) along ridge (2) and template (3).
Note:
In the case of replacement, the adhesive tape is already stuck on the trim (4).
Up to build date 05/04:
When fitting a new trim (4) on convertible top compartment lid, it is necessary to insert a 0.5 mm dia. shim (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) between trim (4) and convertible top compartment lid at screwing points (5).
Pull off liner (protective strip for adhesive surface) and position trim (1) on convertible top compartment lid (2) to create an exact fit.
Tighten down screws (1), see Fig. R514216.
Tightening torque 51 17 10AZ 51 17 Flaps.
Checking ideal adjustment:
- Fit convertible top compartment lid
- Close convertible top and convertible top compartment lid
- Close rear window
Check measurement (A) between trim on convertible top compartment lid (1) and rear window (2).
Measurement (A) = 7.8 ± 4 mm
Note:
Measurement (A) must be uniformly the same over the entire width.
Tighten down nuts (1) on convertible top compartment lid (3).
Tightening torque 51 17 10AZ 51 17 Flaps.
Installation:
Nuts (2) are tightened down only after seal between trim and convertible top compartment lid Removing and Installing / Replacing Middle Seal on Convertible Top Compartment Lid (Top/Connected) has been adjusted.
