Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair






Multifunction Transmission Range Switch (F125), Removing, Installing and Adjusting

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)

Setting Gauge (T10173)

Removing






- Remove the rear noise insulation - 2 -..

- Move the selector lever into "P".

Place a clean cloth under the separating point to catch the escaping ATF.






The illustration shows the installation position with the driveshaft removed.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 -, remove the ATF pipes from the transmission.

- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).

- Bend the heat shield - arrow - slightly upward.

- Remove the cap nut - 4 -.

- Remove cover - 3 - from the selector shaft.

- Carefully bend back the hooks on the lock washer - 1 - using a screwdriver.

If one hook breaks, then the lock washer must be replaced.

- Remove the nut - 2 - and then remove the lock washer from the selector shaft.

- Disconnect the connector from the multifunction transmission range switch.

- Remove the bolts - arrows B - and then remove the multifunction transmission range switch - arrow A - from the selector shaft.

Installing and Adjusting

Tightening specifications:

- Move the selector lever into "N".

- Remove the selector lever cable heat shield bolts - 1, 3 and 4 -.






Ignore - 2 -.

- Move the heat shield to the side.

- Remove the ball head - 1 - on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the (80 - 200).






Ignore - 2 -.

- Move the selector lever on the transmission into "N".

- Install the multifunction transmission range switch onto the selector shaft.

- Install the bolts for the multifunction transmission range switch all the way by hand.

- Place the (T10173) on the selector shaft.






- Turn the multifunction transmission range switch until the tab on the connector - arrow 1 - locks into the groove on the (T10173).

- Install the screw on the side of the (T10173) hand-tight. This secures the (T10173) to the selector shaft.

- Tighten the bolts - arrows B - for the multifunction transmission range switch in this position.






- Remove the (T10173).

- Connect the connector to the multifunction transmission range switch.

- Install the lock washer - 1 -.

- Install the nut - 2 -.

- Bend the hook on the lock washer - 1 - carefully toward the nut using a screwdriver.

If one hook breaks, then the lock washer must be replaced.

- Push the cover - 3 - onto the selector shaft.

- Install the cap nut - 4 -.








Danger of causing damage to the transmission selector lever.

Do not bend the transmission selector lever when installing the selector lever cable. Control it if necessary.

- Press the selector lever cable - 1 - carefully onto the selector lever.

- Turn on the ignition.

- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and select the following menu item:

Measured Values

Driving Gear

- Move the selector lever slowly from "P" through "R, N, D and S".

The engage gear on the selector lever must light up in the selector lever transmission range position display unit (Y26).

The transmission range display (Y6) in the instrument cluster, on the selector lever transmission range position display unit and the display on the vehicle diagnostic tester must match the selector lever position.

If the conditions are not met:

- Repeat adjusting the multifunction transmission range switch and adjust the selector lever cable, if necessary. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

If the conditions are met:

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






- Check selector lever cable adjustment. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the ATF pipes. Refer to => [ ATF Pipes and ATF Cooler ] ATF Pipes and ATF Cooler.

- ATF level, checking and filling. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.

- Check the ATF pipe connections for leaks while checking the ATF level.
