Seat belts, replacing

Front seat belt

Preparations

Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.




Disconnect the battery lead.

Caution! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed seat belt tensioner. This could deploy it.

Caution! Always replace the seat belt (inertia) reels with the seat belt tensioners and seat belt buckles after a collision. Always replace the seat belts, seat belt tensioners and seat belt buckles when an airbag has deployed. In the event of a collision where the airbag did not deploy the seat belt tensioners must be checked and replaced if necessary.

Caution! Seat belt tensioners must never be unscrewed, repaired or moved to another vehicle.

Removing the front seat belt (inertia) reels





Remove:
- the B-post panel according to Panel, B-post, replacing Panel, B-Post, Replacing
- seat belt buckle end mounting.
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- screws (x 2)
- seat belt (inertia) reel with seat belt tensioner by pulling it straight up.
Remove the seat belt (inertia) reel and the seat belt tensioner by pulling the unit straight upwards and leaving the clips and fixture in place.

Installing the front seat belt (inertia) reels





Install:
- the seat belt (inertia) reel with the seat belt tensioner by pushing it down through the clip into the fixture
- screws (x 2). Tighten to 48 Nm
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- seat belt buckle end mounting.
- the B-post panel according to Panel, B-post, replacing Panel, B-Post, Replacing
- Check the seat belt function.

Removing the rear seat belt (inertia) reel





Remove:
- the rear seat cushion. See Rear seat assembly
- the parcel shelf. See Parcel shelf, replacing Parcel Shelf, Replacing
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- the nut for the seat belt (inertia) reel
- the screw for the end mounting
- the seat belt (inertia) reel.

Installing rear seat belt (inertia) reels





Note! Ensure that the guide for the end mounting is correctly positioned during installation. (The end mounting must be pointing forwards at an angle of 45°).

Install:
- the screw for the end mounting. Tighten to 48 Nm
- the seat belt (inertia) reel nuts. Tighten to 48 Nm
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- the parcel shelf. See Parcel shelf, replacing Parcel Shelf, Replacing
- the rear seat cushion. See Rear seat assembly
- the seat belt in the seat belt guide
- Then check the seat belt function.

Replacing seat belt buckles

Removing front seat belt buckle

Remove:
- the seat from the car. See Lifting the front seats in and out . Disconnect the connector from the seat frame
- the tie straps (x 2) for the cable harness
- screw (1)
- the seat belt buckle.

Removing rear seat belt buckles




- the rear seat cushion. See Cushion
- the screw for the seat belt buckle.

Installing the front seat belt buckle

Install:
- the screw for the seat belt buckle. Tighten to 48 Nm
- the tie straps (x 2) for the cable harness
- the connector in the seat frame
- the seat in the car. See Lifting the front seats in and out

Installing rear seat belt buckles
- screw for the seat belt buckle. Tighten to 48 Nm
- the backrest. See Cushion

Checking the function of the seatbelt

Check




Insert a wire in the pipe on the seat belt tensioner as illustrated.
Check the position of the piston in the seat belt tensioner.

Piston position A:
The seat belt tensioner has deployed. Replace both the seat belt (inertia) reels and the seat belt tensioners. Seat Belt Tensioner

Piston position B:
The seat belt tensioner has not deployed.
No action is required

Note! If any airbag has deployed, all seat belts and tensioners must be replaced.

Check seat belt function




Check that the seat belt (inertia) reel inhibits seat belt movement correctly. Pull and jerk the belt repeatedly to check the function.

Warning! The ignition must never, under any circumstances, be switched on when the connector for the SRS ignition cable is being removed or installed.

Ignition in position II. Connect the battery negative lead.





Note! Check that the SRS indicator lamp is not defective by turning the key to position II. The SRS indicator lamp must light and go out after approximately 7 seconds.

Check that the SRS indicator lamp in the combined instrument panel is not constantly lit. Fault-trace the SRS system if the lamp is constantly lit.
