Checking the Antenna Signal
Checking the antenna signal
Checking the antenna amplifier and connectors
Note! Listen to a weak AM station during the check.
Checking the antenna amplifier and connectors
Check the connections and ground terminals for the main antenna / antenna amplifier as follows:
- Twist the antenna cable (1) at the connector for the antenna amplifier. If a crackling or banging noise can be heard in the loudspeakers, replace the antenna cable between the head unit / audio module and the antenna amplifier
- If there is no noise, continue checking the connector for power supply to the antenna amplifier (2)
- Check the ground screw (3) to ensure that the antenna amplifier is in contact with the car body and is grounded properly.
Checking the connector
For cars with chassis number 1- 064000 the antenna cable from the audio module is connected to the antenna amplifier via a connector in the bottom of the left-hand D-post.
- Twist the antenna cable (1) by the connector. If a crackling or banging noise can be heard in the loudspeakers, replace the antenna cable between the head unit / audio module and connector.
Checking the main antenna / connector
- Check that the connector for the main antenna (4) is connected correctly to the antenna on the rear windshield. The cable for AM is marked with white stripes and must be at the top
- Remove the connector. Check the connector for oxidation
- Check if there is a shaded film on the rear windshield. This can reduce AM reception dramatically.
Checking the main antenna
- Measure the resistance between the lower switch for FM (1) on the rear windshield and the ground screw (2). The value must be 7-14 ohms.
- Measure the resistance between the upper switch for AM and the ground screw. The value must = ∞.
Checking the antenna cable
- Check the antenna cable between the antenna amplifier and the audio control module. Check for damage and deformation. Any damage or spliced end on the coaxial cable can alter the capacitance and therefore reduce the antenna signal
- Test by installing a antenna cable loosely between the audio control module and the antenna amplifier. Carry out a new test using the "Seek" function on the audio control module to determine if reception has improved. If so, replace the antenna cable. See Replacing the antenna cable Service and Repair
- Check the antenna amplifier by replacing the unit. See Windshield antenna / amplifier, CD player, replacing Windshield Antenna / Amplifier, CD Player, Replacing.
