Condenser HVAC: Service and Repair






Condenser, replacing

Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Note! Chassis number limit, see below: XC90 with chassis no. from and including 196988, see: Condenser, replacing, B8444S Service and Repair.

Preparations
Read the safety regulations for handling refrigerant acc. to: Refrigerant, safety regulations Technician Safety Information.
Read the instructions for slow and fast leaks acc. to: Oil Air Conditioning (A/C) System, Filling
Drain the refrigerant from the AC-system acc. to: Refrigerant, draining Refrigerant, Draining.

Note! Always plug the pipes and connections when working on the climate control system.

Removing the condenser





Remove:
- the battery lead acc. to: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting
- the left and right headlights acc. to: Headlight/bulb, replacing Headlight/Bulb, Replacing
- the connector for the pressure sensor on the drier filter
- the link for the bonnet opener
- the pipe coupling from above to the left section of the condenser.

Remove:
- the pipe from the retaining clip and move it to one side
- the two upper mountings for the condenser.





Remove:
- the splashguard under the car
- the bumper shell. See Casing bumper front, replacing Service and Repair
- the seal on the condenser
- the pipe coupling from the receiver drier.




Slacken off the 2 lower mounting screws for the condenser.
Remove the condenser.

Installing the condenser

Note! Always use new O-rings lubricated with oil.

Position the condenser.
Check that the condenser is in the correct position in relation to the air conditioning aggregate.
Tighten the lower 2 screws for the condenser.
Position the hose/pipe from the compressor in the mounting clips. Then place the hose/pipe in the pipe coupling on the left-hand side of the condenser.

Note! The hose/pipe must be secured to the retaining clip to ensure that it is correctly positioned before the protective panel is installed.





Install:
- the hose connector on the receiver drier and tighten
- the splashguard under the car
- the connector on the receiver drier
- the seal on the condenser.

Tighten:
- the upper mountings for the condenser
- the screw for the hose connector from the compressor on the left-hand side of the condenser.





Install:
- the link for the bonnet release catch (see the illustration)
- the headlights acc to: Headlight/bulb, replacing Headlight/Bulb, Replacing
- the bumper shell. See Casing bumper front, replacing Service and Repair.

Finishing
Install the battery cable. See Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
Vacuum pump the air conditioning (A/C) system. See: Vacuum pumping Vacuum Pumping.
Fill the AC-system with refrigerant acc. to: Refrigerant, filling Refrigerant, Filling.
Check the AC-system for leaks acc. to: Leak tracing, fluorescent tracing agent / UV lamp Leak Tracing, Fluorescent Tracing Agent/UV Lamp alternatively: Leak tracing, electronic leak tracer Leak Tracing, Electronic Leak Tracer.
