Engine coolant heater, replacing

The information below applies to cars manufactured up to week 38 2001 inclusive.

Preparations:
Remove the wind deflector. See Wind deflector, replacement Service and Repair.

Removal




Install hose clips on both the engine coolant hoses by the heat exchanger.
Position a container under the heater.
Disconnect the hoses.




Undo the quick-release connector for the fuel line and plug the pipe to prevent fuel spillage.
Disconnect the connector.
There are two versions of the following installation:





Variant 1
Remove three screws. Tightening torque 25 Nm.





Variant 2
Remove one screw. Torque 105 Nm and 120° angle-tightening.

Note! Always use a new screw.





Variant 3

Remove
- three screws from the bracket
- the bracket
- the two screws.
Slacken off one screw from the top edge of the heater.





Installation

Bleeding the fuel system
Connect the fuel line to a vacuum pump. Suck carefully until fuel comes out. Connect the cables and hoses.

Installing components
Assemble in reverse order

Note! Always check that there is clearance between the fuel line and water hose.

Final check

Note! Start the engine and let it idle for a few seconds before starting the heater.

Test run the heater. Check the function of the heater. See Engine coolant heater, test running Engine Coolant Heater, Test Running
Check both the coolant hoses and the fuel lines for leakage.
Top up the coolant if necessary.
Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) have been stored during the repair work.
