Parking brake cable, replacement
Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Note! There are two types of cable sleeves.
Earlier version:
- cable sleeve with loose guide sleeve to end piece.
Later version:
- cable sleeve with fixed plastic guide sleeve to the end piece.
The removal and installation procedures are different for the two types. Follow the instructions for the appropriate type.
Applies to the 850 AWD and V70 XC

Preparations
- Check that the ignition is switched off.
Removing the center console
- Remove the cigarette lighter panel (2 screws). If there is a data link connector (DLC), remove this from the panel first.
- Apply the parking brake and move the gear selector lever to neutral.
- Remove the two cover plates, one under the parking brake lever and the other under the arm rest.
- Remove the four screws for the console.
- Disconnect the connectors at the front edge of the console.
Cars with manual gearbox:
Detach the gear selector boot from the transmission tunnel by pressing the rear catch for the boot through the hole under the parking brake lever.
- First raise the console at the rear end and press it forwards until the parking brake lever releases laterally from the console.
- Then raise the front edge and remove the console.
Removing the cable.
- Remove the rear wheel.
- Remove the cable mounting's mounting screw, located in front of the rear wheel arch.
- Remove the cable's clamp and rivet on the trailing arm.
- Disconnect the cable from the trailing arm's end piece by slightly bending up and down on the cable sleeve's guide sleeve.
- Remove the rear end of the cable through the grip on the expander.
- Remove the cable.
Installing the mechanical cable
- Insert the new cable through the floor from the outside.
- Install the front end of the cable in the parking brake mechanism.
- Check that the o-ring on the cable sleeve's guide sleeve is not damaged.
- Install the end of the cable in the grip on the expander.
- Squeeze the grip on the expander together around the cable using pliers.
- Securely press the guide sleeve in the end of the trailing arm.
- Install the cable to the trailing arm using a new clamp and rivet.
- Install the mounting screw in front of the rear wheel arch.
Installing the center console
- Install the center console in reverse order.
Cars with manual gearbox:
- Attach the gear selector lever boot using hooks at front edge of the transmission tunnel.
- Press the catches on the sides and at the rear edge firmly into place.
