Minimum thickness
Replacement limit = 2.0 mm
Preparations
- Remove the wheel.
Removing brake pads
- Push out the split pins. Use a 3 mm drift.
- Pull out the retaining spring.
- Remove the brake pads and shims. Use puller 999 2917 EXTRACTOR 999 2917 Extractor if the brake pads are difficult to remove.
Cleaning and checking
- Clean the brake pad contact surfaces in the brake caliper.
- Check the piston's dirt cap.
- If the dirt guard looks worn, replace it as a precautionary measure.
- If the dirt guard is damaged, overhaul the brake caliper. See Brake caliper rear, overhaul Brake Caliper Rear, Overhaul.
Note! If the dirt guard is damaged, dirt may have penetrated into the cylinder and the brake caliper must be overhauled.
- Check brake disc friction surfaces.
- If the brake disc shows signs of being skew, check its lateral run-out. See Measuring lateral run-out on brake disc Measuring Lateral Run-Out on Brake Disc.
- If the brake disc shows signs of major wear, variations in thickness etc. replace it. See Brake disc rear, replacement Brake Disc Rear, Replacement.
Note! Minimum disc thickness= replacement limit = 8.4 mm. The minimum recommended disc thickness when installing new brake pads = 8.9 mm.

Checking the dirt guard
- Press back the pistons using a pipe wrench or tool 999 2809 PRESS TOOL 999 2809 Press Tool. Do not damage the dirt guard.
- Check that dirt guard is in position properly.
Installing the brake pads
- Grease the shim on both sides with a thin layer of silicone grease (P/N 116 1325-4).
- Install the shim towards the brake pad's rear plates.
- Install the brake pads.
- Install one split pin and retaining spring first, then the other split pin.
Finishing and checking
- If the brake pipe was not removed from the brake caliper, continue to Checking and adjusting.
- If the brake pipe was removed from the brake caliper, top up and bleed the braking system. Then continue as follows.
- Check there are no leaks and that the brakes are working properly.
Checking and adjusting
- Depress the brake pedal a few times.
- Check the level of the brake fluid reservoir.
- Adjust the parking brake if necessary. See Parking brake Service and Repair.
Fitting the wheel
- Ensure that the mating surfaces on the brake discs and rims are clean.
- Lubricate the centering lug on the hub for the rims with rustproofing agent, 116 1038-3.
- Install the wheel.
- Install the screws lightly. Then tighten the screws crosswise. Tighten to 110 Nm. When tightening using an impact wrench, use torque socket 115 8147 TORQUE SOCKET 1/2" 19 MM 115 8147 Torque Socket 1/2" 19 mm.
Note! Crosswise tightening and torque tightening is important to prevent stresses in the brake disc.
