Torque Converter, Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Sliding Gauge

- Lubricate the converter hub - arrow - and sealing lips on the converter seal with a drop of transmission fluid (no more!).






- Slide the converter all the way into the transmission.

- Rotate the converter and press it lightly toward the transmission.

The converter slides noticeably farther into the transmission when the converter hub cut outs slide into the pump toward the inside.

When replacing the converter, the outer sealing lip of the seal can fold inward - arrow -.






- Pull the converter back out of the transmission 5 mm.

This brings the lip - arrow - into its correct position.






- Then, slide the converter all the way into the transmission.

The converter is installed correctly when the transmission can be positioned against the engine flange without using force.

- If that is not the case, the converter must be reinstalled. Then check the installed dimension. Refer to => [ Installed Dimension ].

When the converter is installed correctly, distance - a - between the flange contact surface and the threaded holes on the converter is approximately 23 mm.

- Ensure that the converter does not slip out when the converter and transmission are installed.

If the engine and transmission are connected with force when the converter is installed incorrectly, damage to the transmission and converter results.

The converter is installed correctly when the transmission can be positioned to the engine flange without using force.

- After the transmission is installed, check the transmission fluid level and fill as necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.
