Please observe the notes:
• Regarding the repair information, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• Regarding the transmission fluid, refer to => [ Transmission Fluid ] Transmission Fluid.
• It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
If the transmission pan or the overflow tube was removed, fill the transmission fluid after installing the pan. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ].
If the transmission fluid circuit was opened, it must first be bled. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Circuit, Bleeding ] Transmission Fluid Circuit, Bleeding.
Only then can the transmission fluid level be checked and corrected. Refer to => [ Checking ].
The transmission fluid is available as a replacement part.
1 liter container - part number (G 055 540 A2)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)
• Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)
Shortening the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) :
- Shorten the pipe to dimension - a -. This assures the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) will not touch the bottom of some oil containers.
Dimension - a - = 210 mm
• Dimension - a - is measured starting shaft (green surface) on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
- Make a mark on the pipe, dimension - a -, and cut it using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).
If transmission fluid is added, only use fluid available as a replacement part. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Checking
Short Description
The transmission fluid level is specified by a permanently installed overflow tube in the oil pan.
Check the fluid level when the fluid is at a specific temperature and with the engine running. The fluid temperature is read out using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B). To check the transmission fluid level, remove the plug in the oil pan once the specific temperature has been reached.
An incorrect transmission fluid level affects the function of the transmission.
Prerequisites:
• The transmission is not in emergency operation mode, and the fluid temperature is not higher than 30 °C (86 °F).
• The vehicle must be horizontal.
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
• All electrical consumers and the Air Conditioning (A/C) system must be turned off.
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Connecting the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Press the right button Guided Functions.
- Select the vehicle, the transmission and Check ATF level.
- Press the -> button.
- Press the brake.
- Start the engine.
- Move the selector lever to each position for 2 seconds. Then move the selector lever to the "P" position.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Place a drip tray under the transmission.
At the test temperature of 35° (86 °F):
- Remove the plug - 1 - from the transmission pan.
- Always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug.
• Even if the level of the transmission fluid is too low, at first a small amount of transmission fluid will drip out of the overflow tubes, because it fills during operation.
Drain any transmission fluid still in the overflow tube.
If the fluid continues to drip out of hole:
The transmission fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Install and tighten the plug, with a new seal to 16 Nm. The fluid level test is now completed.
If no fluid drips out of the hole:
- Fill the transmission fluid. Refer to => [ Filling ].
Filling
- Install the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262) quick release coupling to the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2). With the engine running, install the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2) to the oil pan.
- Shake the container before opening.
- Read the information regarding the pipe before attaching the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the fluid container.
- Fill with 1 liter of transmission fluid and check:
If fluid leaks out of the hole:
The transmission fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it drips.
- Install and tighten the plug, with a new seal to 16 Nm. The fluid level test is now completed.
If fluid does not drip out:
- Add another liter.
Too little or too much transmission fluid will impair the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
Draining and Filling
Short Description
First, the fluid temperature is read out. If it is higher than 50° C (122 °F), then let the transmission cool down.
Turn off the engine, remove the overflow tube and drain any transmission fluid. Reinstall the overflow tube and overfill the transmission fluid.
Start the engine, move the selector lever through all the selector lever positions and let the excess transmission fluid drain out.
Check the fluid level and add if necessary.
Requirements:
• The engine is off.
• The vehicle is level and all hoist supports are the same height.
• The noise insulation is removed if necessary
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
• The vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B) is connected
• The transmission fluid should not be warmer than 45 °C (113 °F) when starting the procedure.
• Let the transmission cool down if the oil temperature is higher than 45 °C (113 °F).
Do not start the engine if there is no transmission fluid in the transmission.
Draining
- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
- Remove the plug - 1 - from the transmission pan.
- Remove the overflow tube - C -.
- Drain the transmission fluid.
- Reinstall the overflow tube - C -; tightening specification: 2 Nm
Filling
- Install adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262/2) hand tight.
- Shake the container before opening.
- Read the information regarding the pipe before attaching the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the fluid container.
- Fill with 3.5 to 4 liters of transmission fluid. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Install the plug hand tight.
- Start the engine and let it run at idle.
- With the engine idling, press the brake pedal and shift the selector lever through all the selector lever positions leaving the selector lever at least 10 seconds in each position.
- Move the selector lever into the "N" position.
- Increase the engine speed to 2000 RPM and hold it there for at least 60 seconds.
- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.
- Check the fluid level and add if necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.
