Right Flange Shaft and Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Thrust Piece (T10148)

• Spindle from Seal Installer Set - Rear Diff (3066)

• Slide Hammer-Complete Set (VW 771)

• Additional Part for VW 771 (VW 771/37)

• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

• Drip Tray

Removing

• The seal - 1 - and the sleeve - 2 - are a single part.






• The seal and the sleeve can only be replaced together.

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Turn the steering as far as possible toward right.

- Remove the right drive axle heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield, if equipped.






- Remove the right drive axle from the flange shaft.

- Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Be careful not to damage the paint on the drive axle.

- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device or a drip tray under the transmission.

- Remove flange shaft bolt - arrow -, by installing two bolts into the flange and counter holding the flange shaft using a pry bar.






- Remove the flange shaft and the pressure spring.

- Replace the seal and the sleeve together.






A ridge is located on the internal diameter of the sleeve.

- Install the additional part for VW 771 (VW 771/37) directly behind the ridge inside the sleeve.

- Using force, push the additional part for VW 771 (VW 771/37) into the sleeve.

Installing

- Clean the seal seat inside the transmission.

- Install the seal and the sleeve together.






A Install the spindle from the seal installer set - rear diff (3066) into the threaded piece in the differential.
B M12 nut

- Turn the nut - B - and pull the seal with the sleeve all the way over the thrust piece (T10148).

- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lips half way with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).

- Install the flange shaft.






- Press the flange shaft against the pressure spring into the transmission and tighten the bolt - arrow - to specification, see - item 10 - in the => [ Differential Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Install the drive axle to the flange shaft.

- Install the right drive axle heat shield and bolts - arrows -, if equipped.






- Check the transmission fluid level and add, as necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking ] Transmission Fluid Level, Checking.

- Install the noise insulation.
