Left Flange Shaft and Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Slide Hammer-Complete Set (VW 771)

Thrust Piece (T10160)

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Drip Tray

Removing

- Remove the left wheel.

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Remove the left front wheel housing liner..

- Turn the steering wheel to the left.

- Remove left drive axle from flange shaft.

- Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Be careful not to damage the paint on the drive axle.

- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device or a drip tray under the transmission.

- Remove the flange shaft bolt, by installing two bolts into the flange and counter holding the flange shaft using a pry bar.






- Remove the flange shaft and the pressure spring.

- Remove the flange shaft seal using the slide hammer-complete set (VW 771) and the additional part for VW 771 (VW 771/37).






Installing

- Lightly oil the new seal on the outer circumference.






- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).

- Install the seal all the way in without tilting it using the thrust piece (T10160).






- Install the flange shaft.

- Press the flange shaft against the pressure spring into the transmission and tighten the bolt. Tightening specification, see - item 10 - in the => [ Differential Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Attach the drive axle to the flange shaft.

- Check the transmission fluid level and add, as necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking ] Transmission Fluid Level, Checking.

- Install the left front wheel housing liner..

- Install the noise insulation.

- Install the wheel.
