Evaporator Core: Service and Repair
Evaporator
• Extract the refrigerant using the (ROB134APF) (or succeeding model).
• Environmentally hazardous draining of refrigerant is an offense punishable by law.
• See notes, refer to => [ Refrigerant Circuit, Specialized Repairs ] Procedures.
Removing
- Turn off all electric consumers.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Remove the key.
- Remove the heating and A/C unit. Refer to => [ Heater and A/C Unit ] Removal and Replacement.
- Heating and A/C unit, disassembling and assembling. Refer to => [ Heater and A/C Unit Overview ] Heater and A/C Unit Overview.
- Disassemble the evaporator housing. Refer to => [ Evaporator Housing ] Overhaul.
- Remove seal - 6 - from evaporator housing.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (1.5 Nm).
- Disconnect evaporator housing upper section - 1 - from evaporator housing lower section - 7 -.
- Remove evaporator - 3 - and expansion valve - 5 - from the evaporator housing lower section - 7 -.
- Remove insulation - 4 - from expansion valve - 5 -.
• Make certain not to damage the evaporator seal - 8 - when removing.
Installing
• Check the condensation water drain in the evaporator housing lower section - 5 - and clean if necessary before installing the evaporator - 2 -.
• Clean the evaporator housing lower section - 5 - and, if necessary, the evaporator - 2 - before installing.
• Make certain the seal - 1 - is not damaged and is sealed all the way around before the evaporator - 2 - is installed.
- Mount the insulation - 3 - on the expansion valve - 4 -.
- Install the evaporator - 2 - in the evaporator housing lower section - 5 -. Make certain that the surrounding seal - 1 - is not damaged.
Additional installation is in reverse order of removal.
• Check that the insulation - 3 - has been installed correctly after the assembly of both housing halves.
• If insulation - 3 - is missing or not installed correctly, it can cause reduced performance of the A/C system (change of adjusted control characteristics of expansion valve due to radiant heat).
