Axle Oil in Bevel Box, Checking or Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Also for filling:
• Charging Device F/Haldex 2 Coup. (VAS 6291)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6291/3)
Bevel box is attached to the side of the manual transmission and has a separate self-contained oil system.
For the correct bevel gear transmission fluid, refer to the Parts Catalog.
Check transmission fluid level inside the manual transmission. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid, Checking ] Service and Repair.
Gear Oil in Bevel Box, Checking
Requirements
• Bevel box must be in installation location.
Perform the following work:
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the right drive axle heat shield from the bevel box - arrows -.
- Place a drip tray under the bevel box.
• Cover the area below the oil filler plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the transmission fluid filler plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
It is necessary to replace the transmission fluid filler plug - arrow -.
Oil level is correct if bevel box is filled with oil as far as bottom edge of oil filler hole.
If oil comes in contact with bevel box, remove the bevel box carefully.
- If necessary, fill the gear oil. Refer to => [ Gear Oil in Bevel Box, Filling ].
- Install a new transmission fluid filler plug - arrow - and tighten it to the tightening specification.
Gear Oil in Bevel Box, Filling
Requirements
• Bevel box must be in the installation location.
Perform the following work:
- Remove the right drive axle heat shield from bevel box - arrows -.
- Use (VAS 6291) :
- Route the hose from the (VAS 6291) through the engine compartment.
• Cover area below the oil filler plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the transmission fluid filler plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
- Disconnect the (VAS 6291/3) - A - and the elbow connection - B -.
- Install the (VAS 6291/3) - A - all the way in
- Attach the elbow connection - B - to the adapter for oil filling - A -.
- Close the valve - arrow -.
- Attach the oil container - A - to the (VAS 6291).
• The hose must not hang through.
- Open the valve - arrow - and hold the oil container as illustrated.
The bevel box is now filled.
- Lift the vehicle after a few minutes.
• If the bevel box is filled correctly, oil should leak out of the adapter - A -
• If no oil is escaping, lower the vehicle and perform filling procedure again.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Set down the oil container (for example, on a tool cart) when the oil starts to leak out of the adapter - A -.
A portion of the excess oil runs back into the oil container.
- Disconnect the (VAS 6291) when the oil stops running back. Push the tab in direction of - arrow -. (shown on the (VAS 6291/2) ).
• Make sure there is still oil in the hose of the (VAS 6291).
- Remove the adapter.
- Install the new transmission fluid filler plug - arrow -.
- Tighten the transmission fluid filler plug to the tightening specification.
• Carefully remove any oil that has flowed onto the bevel box and other components.
- Attach the right drive axle heat shield to the bevel box - arrows - and tighten it to the tightening specification.
- Install the noise insulation.
