Selector Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Sleeve (VW 423)
• Pulling Hook (T20143)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
Removing
- Remove the air filter housing.
- Remove the shift cable lock washer - 3 - from the transmission shift lever - 1 -.
- Remove the shift cable - 2 - from the transmission shift lever pin - arrow -.
• To avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable retainer must be disconnected from the relay lever before removal.
- Pull the locking mechanism all the way forward in the - direction of arrow 1 - and then unlock it to the left in the - direction of arrow 2 -.
- Push the relay lever forward and guide the selector cable out of the cable retainer.
- Remove the clip - arrow 1 - and then remove the relay lever together with the cable retainer - arrow 2 -.
• If it is not possible to remove the relay lever through the transmission bracket, then remove the sliding shoe from the transmission shift lever.
- Remove the transmission shift lever from the gear shift shaft.
- Remove the seal using the pulling hook (T20143/1).
Installing
- Lightly coat the outer circumference of the new seal with oil.
- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
- Install the seal using the sleeve (VW 423).
- Install the transmission shift lever to the gear shift unit, refer to => [ Transmission Shift Lever, Installing ] Shift Mechanism Overviews and tighten the nut to specification. See - item 6 - in => [ Shift and Selector Cables ] Shift Mechanism Overviews.
• Grease the bearing areas and sliding surfaces on the relay lever and transmission shift lever, refer to => [ Relay Lever, Lubricating ] Shift Mechanism Overviews and to => [ Transmission Shift Lever, Lubricating ] Shift Mechanism Overviews. For the correct grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Install the relay lever and cable retainer - arrow 2 - all the way into the gear shift cover.
- Install the clip - arrow 1 - and make sure it is locked into place.
- Apply a small amount of grease to the transmission shift lever pin - arrow -.
• For the correct grease allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Secure the shift cable - 2 - to the transmission shift lever with a new lock washer - 3 -.
- Install the selector cable into the cable retainer on the relay lever.
- Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
- Install the air filter housing.
