Shift Mechanism Overviews






Shift Mechanism Overviews

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery when working on the shift mechanism inside the engine compartment.

Connect the battery and follow the procedure to be performed after connecting the battery.

Remove the air filter housing whenever working on the shift mechanism inside the engine compartment.

The shift mechanism must be removed in order to replace the operating cables. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism ] Shift Mechanism.

Do not bend the operating cables.

Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation






1 Emblem

Can be carefully pried out of a plastic or leather shift knob.

2 Shift Knob

With the boot.

The shift knob and boot cannot be separated from each other. Always replace them together.

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation ] Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation.

3 Clamp

Always replace.

For securing the shift knob to the shift lever.

Secure using the hose clamp pliers (V.A.G 1275).

4 Noise Insulation

Not installed on all vehicles.

Retaining tab spacing varies, therefore can only be installed in one position.

5 Shift Lever

Shift Lever and Housing

Lubricate the bearing areas and the sliding surfaces. For the correct grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.

Shift mechanism disassembly and assembly. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism ] Shift Mechanism.






1 Base Plate

Bend the tabs down in order to remove.

Always replace.

2 Gasket

Always replace.

3 Shift Lever

Can be removed and installed with the shift lever guide - item 15 - installed.

4 Washer

Slide onto the shift lever as far as the stop - arrow -.

5 Lock Washer

Be careful not to damage the cables when removing them.

Always replace.

6 Selector Cable

Pry off of the selector bracket.

Press onto the selector bracket inside the shift housing.

Installed position, refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables, Installed Position ] Description and Operation.

7 Bushing

8 Shift Cable

Pry off of the shift lever guide

Press onto the shift lever guide inside the shift housing.

Installed position, refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables, Installed Position ] Description and Operation.

9 Insulation

10 Bearing Shell

Will get damaged when being removed.

Always replace.

11 Bushing

12 Lock Washer

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Lock Washer, Removing and Installing ].

13 Pressure Spring

Removing and Installing, refer to => [ Lock Washer, Removing and Installing ].

14 Bushing

15 Shift Lever Guide

16 Nut

M6 - 8 Nm

M8 - 25 Nm

Quantity: 4

17 Gasket

Between the shift housing and the underbody.

Equipped with self adhesive.

Affix to the shift housing.

18 Shift Housing

With the spring and selector bracket.

The spring and selector bracket cannot be removed.

Lock Washer, Removing and Installing





- Hold the shift lever - 2 - tight.

- Push the bushing - 3 - down in the - direction of the arrow -.

- Remove the lock washer - 1 -.

Shift and Selector Cables

Lubricate the bearing areas and the sliding surfaces. For the correct grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.






1 Selector Shaft with Selector Cover

(Shift unit)

2 Clip

For the relay lever.

3 Transmission Shift Lever

With a balance weight.

Install so that the master spline aligns with the shift rod. Refer to => [ Transmission Shift Lever, Installing ].

To install, lubricate, refer to => [ Transmission Shift Lever, Lubricating ].

Adjust the shift mechanism after installing. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Installed position, refer to => [ Transmission Shift Lever/Relay Lever Installed Position ].

4 Cable Retainer

For attaching the shift cable to the transmission shift lever.

Adjust the shift mechanism after installing. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Do not interchange, the cable locking mechanisms for the selector cable to the relay lever and for the shift cable to the transmission shift lever are different. Refer to => [ Cable Retainer Allocation ].

5 Lock Washer

Always replace.

Removing, refer to => [ Removing and Installing the Shift Cable from/to the Transmission Shift Lever ].

6 Nut

23 Nm

Always replace.

Self-locking

7 Lock Washer

Always replace.

Be careful not to damage the cables when removing them.

8 Shift Cable

Attach to the cable retainer - item 4 -.

Installed position, refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables, Installed Position ] Description and Operation.

9 Selector Cable

Attach to the cable retainer - item 19 -.

Installed position, refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables, Installed Position ] Description and Operation.

10 Shift Housing

11 Lock Washers

Always replace.

Be careful not to damage the cables when removing them.

12 Cable Bracket

Made of plastic.

13 Bolt

20 Nm

For securing the cable bracket to the transmission.

Quantity: 2

14 Grommet

For the cable bracket to the transmission.

15 Spacer

16 Nut

20 Nm

For securing the cable bracket to the transmission.

17 Relay Lever

Made of plastic.

Installed position, refer to => [ Transmission Shift Lever/Relay Lever Installed Position ].

Cable retainer removing and installing, refer to - item 19 -.

To install, lubricate, refer to => [ Relay Lever, Lubricating ].

Adjust the shift mechanism after installing. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

On the shift cover, disconnecting and reconnecting, refer to => [ Remove and Installing the Relay Lever from/to the Shift Cover and Transmission Shift Lever ].

18 Sliding Shoe

19 Cable Retainer

For attaching the selector cable to the relay lever.

Adjust the shift mechanism after installing. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Do not interchange, the cable locking mechanisms for the selector cable to the relay lever and for the shift cable to the transmission shift lever are different.

Removing from the selector cable. Refer to => [ Removing the Cable Retainer from the Shift and Selector Cables ].

Allocation, refer to => [ Cable Retainer Allocation ].

Removing from the relay lever, refer to => [ Prying the Selector Cable Retainer off of the Relay Lever ].

Installing onto the relay lever, refer to => [ Installing the Selector Cable Retainer to the Relay Lever ].

20 Locking Pin

For adjusting the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Cable Retainer Allocation





These holes have different diameters.






Transmission Shift Lever, Installing





- When installing the transmission shift lever, make sure the tooth gap - arrow A - is placed over the missing selector shaft teeth - arrow B -.

Transmission Shift Lever, Lubricating





Lubricate the selector lever guide rail - B -, into which the relay lever engage, especially carefully.

For the correct grease allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.

The illustration of the transmission shift lever may differ from the original part.

Transmission Shift Lever/Relay Lever Installed Position





1. Transmission shift lever with balance weight

2. Clip

3. The relay lever fits into the guide rail on the transmission shift lever via the sliding shoe - arrow -.


Removing the Cable Retainer from the Shift and Selector Cables





- Pull the locking mechanism all the way forward - arrow 1 - and lock it in the - direction of arrow 2 -.

- Remove the cable - B - from the cable retainer - A -.

Removing and Installing the Shift Cable from/to the Transmission Shift Lever





Removing

- Lift the clamp and remove the lock washer - 3 - for the shift cable from the transmission shift lever - 1 -.

- Remove the shift cable from the pin - arrow -.

Installing

Replace the shift cable lock washer - 3 -.

Coat the pin - arrow - with a small amount of grease.

- Push the shift cable - 2 - onto the pin on the transmission shift lever - 1 - and secure it with the lock washer - 3 -.

Relay Lever, Lubricating





Lubricate the shaft - A - on the relay lever carefully - arrows - with 0.2 g of grease.

For the correct grease allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.

The illustration of the relay lever may differ from the original part.

Remove and Installing the Relay Lever from/to the Shift Cover and Transmission Shift Lever





Removing

- Remove the clip - arrow 1 - and then remove the relay lever together with the cable retainer - arrow 2 -.

Installing

Lubricating the bearing areas and sliding surfaces, refer to => [ Relay Lever, Lubricating ]. For the correct grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Install the relay lever and cable retainer - arrow 2 - all the way into the shift cover.

- Install the clip - arrow 1 - and make sure it is locked into place.

Prying the Selector Cable Retainer off of the Relay Lever





The relay lever is removed.

- Insert a screwdriver - A - between the bushing - B - and the relay lever.

Installing the Selector Cable Retainer to the Relay Lever





The relay lever is removed.

The cable retainer may only be installed at the bushing - arrow -.

The cable retainer must move freely on the relay lever.

The cable retainer must be behind the tab.

Make sure it engages securely.
