Steering Gear, Generation 3

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Ball joint puller (3287A)

Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)

Torque wrench 40-200 Nm (VAG 1332)

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383A)

Removing

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove the footwell trim, remove nuts - arrows - to do so.





- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the universal joint - 2 - from the steering gear.





- Remove the front wheels.

- Loosen the nut for the tie rod ball joint, but do not remove it yet.

CAUTION!
To protect the threads , leave the nut on the stud a few turns.

- Press the tie rod end off of wheel bearing housing using the (3287A).





- Remove the lower noise insulation.

- Remove the pendulum support from the transmission, remove bolts - 14 - to do so.





- Remove the bracket for the exhaust system from the subframe.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the heat shield.





- Remove the heat shield from the subframe.

- Remove the steering gear bolts - 3 - and - 5 -.





- Remove the stabilizer bar bracket bolts - 11 - and - 16 -.





- Secure the subframe and brackets. Refer to --> [ Subframe Locating ] Subframe Locating.

- Place the (VAG 1383A) under the subframe.





- Place a block of wood - 1 - between the (VAG 1383A) and the subframe.

- Loosen bolts - 4 and 5 - and lower the subframe with brackets slightly. Observe the electrical wires when doing this.





- Remove the heat shield - 1 - above the exhaust system.





- Remove the bolts - arrows -.

- Remove the cable guide from the subframe - arrow -.





- Unclip all other cable mounting points on the steering gear.

- Disconnect all electrical connectors from the steering gear.

- Lower the subframe using the (VAG 1383A) until the steering gear can be removed.

- Lay the steering gear aside as depicted in the illustration.





This avoids damages on the control module - 1 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

The steering gear threaded sleeves must be seated in the bracket holes.

Coat the seal on the steering gear with lubricant, e.g. soft soap, before installing the steering gear.

After attaching the steering gear to driveshaft, make sure that seal on steering gear is positioned to mounting plate without kinks and opening to footwell is sealed correctly. Ingress of water and/or noises may be the result.

Make sure sealing surfaces are clean.

Before attaching the subframe bolts, position the steering gear on the subframe and attach the steering gear bolts and stabilizer bar.

- Clamp off the electrical connectors to the steering gear.

- Install the lower noise insulation.

Make sure that the boot is not damaged or twisted.

- Universal joint to steering gear.

- Connect the battery..

- Perform the steering angle sensor basic setting using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051).

After installation, the position of the steering wheel must be checked with a road test.

If the steering wheel is crooked or a new steering gear was installed, the toe on the front axle must be checked and adjusted if necessary.

- Perform a vehicle alignment. Refer to --> [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.

If a new steering gear was installed, the power steering control module must be adapted using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).

- Perform a power steering control module basic setting using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).
