Clutch Cover, Removing
Clutch Cover, Removing
Short Description
The cover seals the transmission from the outside. It is held in place by a circlip. After the circlip has been removed, the cover can be pried out of it seating. The cover and circlip must always be replaced. Never install a new cover using a hammer and never oil the center seal or touch it with your hand! If this should occur, the cover will certainly leak!
To perform work on the cover, the transmission must be removed.
- Remove the transmission. Refer to one of the following:
GTI through 2009, refer to => [ Transmission, Removing ] Transmission, Removing.
GTI from 2010, refer to => [ Transmission, Removing ] Transmission, Removing.
Golf with 2.0L TDI, refer to => [ Transmission, Removing ] Transmission, Removing.
- Install the transmission to the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Transporting and Securing to Assembly Stand ] Procedures.
- Drain the oil.
Up to transmission production date "September 20, 2004", transmissions with two plugs were installed.
Then the second plug was deleted so that only the one plug - A - can be used to drain the oil or to adjust the oil level.
A plastic overflow tube is located in this hole (with 8 mm hex socket head, tightening specification: 3 Nm). Its length determines the oil level in the transmission.
- Remove the overflow tube.
- Drain the oil.
- Tighten the overflow tube to 3 Nm.
- Install the plug - A - with a new seal - arrow -.
Tightening Specification: 45 Nm
- If it is necessary, remove the filter.
There are often uncertainties as to whether the filter must be replaced or not.
For information on changing the oil filter, refer to => [ When To Change Oil Filter ] General Repair Information this can help when making the decision.
- Install the new filter with the seat facing downward and tighten the housing to 20 Nm.
- After performing repairs, the filter does not need to be changed again when filling with oil.
- Remove the circlip.
Remove the cover, pry it out using a screwdriver.
Only install a new cover. Refer to => [ Clutch Cover, Installing ] Clutch Cover, Installing.
