Pinpoint Test Y: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) status from the Restraints Control Module (RCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If an SRS concern is detected, the RCM sets a DTC and sends a message to the IPC to turn on the air bag warning indicator.

If the SRS status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the air bag warning indicator remains in the last indication mode (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the SRS status message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0151:00 and defaults the air bag warning indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- RCM
- IPC


PINPOINT TEST Y: THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

Y1 CARRY OUT THE IPC AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC DataLogger .
- Select the IPC air bag warning indicator (AIRBAG_LMP) active command. Command the air bag warning indicator on and off while observing the air bag warning indicator.
- Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to Y2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.

Y2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE RCM SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the RCM self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Testing and Inspection.

No
GO to Y3.

Y3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0151:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BN. Pinpoint Tests BN: DTC U0151:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
