Pinpoint Test X: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the electronic throttle control status and the transmission status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in electronic throttle control system or the transmission, the PCM provides the IC with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator. When an AWD fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IC a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
If the electronic throttle control or transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator ON.
If the AWD status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0114 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator ON.
NOTE: If U0100 is set in the IC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Electronic throttle control concern
- Transmission concern
- AWD concern
- IC

-------------------------------------------------
X1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (WR_LMP_ETC) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off. Observe the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to X2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
X2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND IC SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the continuous self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, Go To Pinpoint Test AE. Pinpoint Tests AE: DTC U0100
