Diagnostic Overview
The Steering Wheel Switch Illumination Is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
REFER to Dimmable Backlighting .
Pinpoint Test
1. CHECK THE OTHER DIMMABLE LIGHTING SWITCHES
1. Ignition ON.
2. Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
3. Place a shop light above the instrument panel ambient light sensor to ensure that the BCM (Body Control Module) outputs maximum illumination voltage.
4. Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
Are all the dimmable steering wheel switches inoperative?
2. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES
1. Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
2. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.
3. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
6. Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
7. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
3. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module)
1. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
4. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Connect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.
3. Connect: Clockspring C218A.
4. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
5. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module
6. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
7. Ignition ON.
8. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
5. CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Remove the clockspring. REFER to Clockspring .
3. Ignition ON.
4. Measure:
5. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
6. CHECK THE LH (Left Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: LH (Left Hand) Lower Steering Wheel Switch.
3. Ignition ON.
4. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
7. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Lower Steering Wheel Switch.
3. Ignition ON.
4. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
8. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE UPPER (AIR BAG) HARNESS
1. Ignition OFF.
2. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
3. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module
4. Disconnect: Inline C260.
5. Ignition ON.
6. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

1. Ignition OFF.
2. Connect: Inline C260.
3. Disconnect: LH (Left Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
10. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Connect: Inline C260.
3. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
