Driver Air Bag Module

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, REFER to Safety Warnings . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Removal

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

NOTE: The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

If installing a new component for a SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) fault, continue to step 2. Otherwise, turn the ignition off, wait at least one minute and continue to step 3.

2. NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct RCM (Restraints Control Module) fuse is removed and the ignition is on.
Depower the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). REFER to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - with Intelligent Access (IA) or Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - without Intelligent Access (IA) . Service and Repair

3. Remove the steering column shroud. REFER to Steering Column Shroud.

4. Use a flat head screwdriver with a 5 mm (0.1969 in) to 6 mm (0.2362 in) head to insert into the small hole in the back of the steering wheel at a 50° angle.





5. Detach 1 side of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.

1. Turn the steering wheel clockwise 90°.

2. Insert the screwdriver into the small hole and turn it to disengage the spring clip.

3. Pull out on the driver air bag module and detach 1 side of it from the steering wheel.






6. Separate the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.

1. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise 180°.

2. Insert the screwdriver into the small hole and turn it to disengage the spring clip.

3. Pull out on the driver air bag module and detach 1 side of it from the steering wheel.






7. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors (2 shown) and remove the driver air bag module.





Installation

1. NOTICE: The driver air bag module electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module. Damage to the connector or component may occur.

Connect the 3 electrical connectors.

2. NOTE: Audible clicks are heard when the driver air bag module spring clips are seated behind the steering wheel retainers.
Align the driver air bag module to the steering wheel and, while pushing inward, seat the driver air bag module spring clips behind the steering wheel retainers.

3. If the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) was depowered, repower the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). REFER to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - with Intelligent Access (IA) or Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - without Intelligent Access (IA) . Service and Repair
