Diagnostic Overview
Steering Wheel Controls Are Inoperative Or Do Not Operate Correctly
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
REFER to Steering Wheel Switch Function .
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
Pinpoint Test
1. DETERMINE THE INOPERATIVE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
1. Ignition ON.
2. Operate both RH (Right Hand) upper and RH (Right Hand) lower steering wheel switches.
Is the RH (Right Hand) upper steering wheel inoperative?
2. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH PIDs (Parameter Identifications)
1. Ignition ON.
2. Using a scan tool, view FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
3. Monitor the steering wheel controls PIDs (Parameter Identifications) while pressing each RH (Right Hand) lower steering wheel switch.
- Voice (SCS_VOICE)
- SEEK+ (SCS_SEEKPLUS)
- SEEK- (SCS_SEEKMINUS)
- VOL+ (SCS_VOL UP)
- VOL- (SCS_VOL DOWN)
Do the PID (Parameter Identification) values agree with the switch positions?
3. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module
3. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Lower Steering Wheel Switch.
4. Disconnect: FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module).
5. Measure:
Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
4. CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
5. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Connect: Clockspring C218A.
2. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
3. Measure:
Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
6. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
1. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
7. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
8. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE CLOCKSPRING DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
9. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) LOWER STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
10. CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
11. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
12. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH PIDs (Parameter Identifications)
1. Ignition ON.
2. Using a scan tool, view IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
3. Monitor the steering wheel controls PIDs (Parameter Identifications) while pressing each RH (Right Hand) upper steering wheel switch.
- OK (BTN_R_SET)
- Up (BTN_R_UP)
- Down (BTN_R_DOWN)
- Left (BTN_R_LEFT
- Right (BTN_R_RIGHT)
Do the PID (Parameter Identification) values agree with the switch positions?
13. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) FOR AN OPEN
1. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Ignition OFF and wait one minute.
2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module Leave inline C260 to the upper switches connected.
3. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
4. Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).
5. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
14. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE CONNECTOR FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: Steering Wheel to Air Bag Inline C260.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
15. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE CONNECTOR AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
16. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS THROUGH THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
1. Remove the clockspring. REFER to Clockspring .
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
17. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS THROUGH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
18. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) AND THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Is the resistances less than 3 ohms?
19. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
1. Connect: Inline C260 to the upper switches.
2. Connect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
3. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
20. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
21. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: Inline C260 to upper steering wheel switches.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
22. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
23. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE CLOCKSPRING DISCONNECTED
1. Remove the clockspring. REFER to Clockspring .
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
24. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) DISCONNECTED
1. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
25. CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION
1. Disconnect and inspect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.
2. Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
3. Reconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
4. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
26. CHECK FOR CORRECT FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) connector.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (install new connectors or terminals, - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins, - install new terminals pins
- pushed-out pins, - install new pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
