Pinpoint Test J: DTC U0140

Normal Operation

Several modules receive network messages from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) via the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The information included in the message is the ignition switch position.

As more than one module receives each of these messages, all modules receiving a particular message should exhibit a symptom if the message is missing.

- DTC U0140 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module (GEM)) - set by the Parking Aid Module (PAM) when network messages are missing from the SJB for greater than 5 seconds with the ignition in RUN.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Module communication
- PAM
- SJB



PINPOINT TEST J: DTC U0140

J1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN


- Ignition ON.
- Verify that there is an observable symptom present.
- Is an observable symptom present?

Yes
GO to J2.

No
The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.

J2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK


- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Carry out the network test.
- Does the SJB pass the network test?

Yes
GO to J3.

No
REFER to Information Bus.

J3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST


- Check for recorded PAM DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded?

Yes
For DTC B1317, GO to Pinpoint Test I. Pinpoint Test I: DTC B1317

For DTC B1318, GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: DTC B1318

No
GO to J4.

J4 RECHECK THE PAM DTCs


NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out.

- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the PAM self-test.
- Is DTC U0140 still present?

Yes
GO to J5.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic.

J5 CHECK FOR DTC U0140 SET IN OTHER MODULES


- Clear all DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test.
- Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules.
- Is DTC U0140 set in any module?

Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to Body Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new PAM. REFER to Parking Aid Module (PAM) - Explorer Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
