Camshaft: Testing and Inspection

11 31 005 - Checking camshaft timing (M57T2)





Special tools required:
- 11 6 080 11 6 080 Plug Mandrel
- 11 6 321 11 6 320 Locking Plug






Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Removing cylinder head cover Service and Repair





Crank engine at central bolt.

The cams on the camshafts (1) of the 1st cylinder point in the direction of travel to the right.

See illustration M57TU.





Remove protective cap in direction of arrow.

Installation:
Reinstall protective cap with some grease.





Hold crankshaft in TDC position with special tool 11 6 080 11 6 080 Plug Mandrel.

Important!
Do not turn the engine back.

Special tool 11 6 080 11 6 080 Plug Mandrel must be removed before engine is started.





Fit special tool 11 6 321 11 6 320 Locking Plug on inlet camshaft (1).

Note:
Special tool 11 6 321 11 6 320 Locking Plug must lie flush on cylinder head.





For a better overview, this work step is shown without the vacuum pump.

Fit special tool 11 6 321 11 6 320 Locking Plug on exhaust camshaft (1).

Note:
Special tool 11 6 321 11 6 320 Locking Plug must lie flush on cylinder head.

If necessary, adjust camshaft timing Adjustments.





Assemble engine.
