Subframe with Attachments

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Engine/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Transmission Support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Tensioning Strap (T10038)

Removing the Subframe and Attachments

For later reassembly work where the drive axle to wheel hub threaded connection must be loosened, note that it must not be done while the vehicle is resting on its wheels. Drive axle to wheel hub threaded connection, loosening => [ Hex Bolt Between Drive Axle and Wheel Hub, Loosening and Tightening ] Hex Bolt Between Drive Axle and Wheel Hub, Loosening and Tightening

- Remove wheels.

- Remove the coil springs. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

Affects Roadster Vehicles






- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 3 - and remove diagonal braces - 2 -.

Applies to all Vehicles

- Remove the rear muffler.

- Disconnect the electric wires to Haldex clutch, ABS speed sensor and, on vehicles with level control system sensor, connectors and unclip.

- Remove the bolt - 2 - and washer - 1 -.






- Push the brake lever - 2 - in direction of arrow and disengage the parking brake cable - 3 -.






- Squeeze the tabs - 1 - and remove the parking brake cable.

- Remove bolt - 1 - and remove parking brake cable - 2 - from bracket of brake cable.






- Remove the brake caliper.

- Secure the brake caliper to the body so that the weight of the caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose or brake line.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and then the cowl panel - 2 -






- Mark the installation position of the mounting bracket on the body.






- Remove the bolts - arrows -.

- Check for a factory-applied marking (colored dot) on the joint washer and Haldex clutch flange - arrows -. If there is not one, mark the location of the joint washer and the Haldex clutch flange to each other - arrows -.






- Remove rear driveshaft tube from rear final drive with joint washer and vibration damper - arrows -.






- Remove the center bracket screws - arrows - two turns.






The illustration shows the center bearing with heat shield removed.

- Secure driveshaft - 3 - to exhaust system bracket - 2 - with a wire - 1 -.






- Move rear driveshaft tube as far as possible in direction of transmission.

Before -LOOSENING- subframe screws, secure vehicle against tipping over (e.g. load luggage compartment with approximately 50 kg).

Affects Coupe Vehicles






- Place (V.A.G 1383 A) with (V.A.G 1359/2) under subframe and secure with (T10038).

Affects Roadster Vehicles






- Place (V.A.G 1383 A) with (V.A.G 1359/2) under subframe and secure with (T10038).

- Support rear of subframe with a suitable wood block - 2 -.

- Support front of subframe with a suitable wood block - 4 - under crossmember - 3 -.

- Route (T10038) over subframe and under rear final drive - 1 -.

Do not route Tensioning Strap (T10038) under driveshaft flange.

- Route (T10038) under (V.A.G 1359/2) and tighten.

Applies to All Vehicles






- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

Only the left side of the vehicle is shown in the illustration.

- Carefully lower subframe with components.

When lowering, make sure there is enough clearance between the brake lines, electric wires and centering pins to drive axle.

Installing the Subframe with its Attachments

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- The center of the subframe mount holes must be aligned to the bolting points on the body.

- Always install the bolt - 2 - with a washer - 1 -.

- If the vehicle has electronic damping (Audi Magnetic Ride), then program the control position. Refer to vehicle diagnostic tester.

- If the vehicle has automatic head lamp range control, then perform a basic setting on the headlamps.

Checking and aligning front/rear axle must take place on a VW/Audi recommended alignment stand.
