Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Drive Chain
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Press Tube (30 - 100)
• Thrust Piece (40 - 105)
• Kukko 44/1 Two Arm Puller
• Protective gloves
Removing
- Removing oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the upper toothed belt guard.
Components could be destroyed by the toothed belt jump off.
• Only rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation.
- Turn the crankshaft by the toothed belt crankshaft sprocket bolt until the camshaft sprocket is at "TDC".
• The marking on the camshaft sprocket must align with the arrow on the toothed belt guard - top arrow -.
• The notch on the vibration damper must align with the arrow on the toothed belt guard - bottom arrow -.
- Remove the guard; if necessary, release the tabs through the openings - arrows - with a small screwdriver.
- Loosening the bolt for the oil pump chain sprocket, while doing this counterhold the crankshaft by the toothed belt sprocket bolt.
- Release the tension on the chain rail with a screwdriver - arrow - and secure it with the 3 mm socket wrench - 1 -.
- Remove the belt pulley side sealing flange. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.
Risk of destroying due to reversed running direction on a used drive chain.
• Mark the drive chain running direction with arrows using paint for installation later. Do not mark the chain using a punch, notch or similar.
- Remove the chain sprocket and oil pump drive chain.
- Remove the drive chain sprocket using the Kukko 44/1 tow arm puller - 2 -; while protecting crankshaft end with the (40 - 105) - 1 -.
Installing
Installation is done in reverse order, observe the following:
Risk of burning.
• Wear protective gloves!
- Heat the drive chain sprocket in a warming oven at 220 °C (428 °F) for approximately 15 minutes.
• Installed position: the wide drive chain sprocket collar faces the engine.
- Position the drive chain sprocket on the shaft stub with pliers and slide it onto the crankshaft as far as the stop with a (30 - 100).
- When reinstalling a used camshaft timing chain, note running direction marking.
- Install the belt pulley side sealing flange. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.
- Install the balance shaft module with oil pump. Refer to => [ Balance Shaft Module with Oil Pump ] Balance Shaft Module With Oil Pump.
