ATF Pipes and ATF Cooler
Cooler Overview

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)
• Protective goggles
Removing
- Remove the front noise insulation - 1 -.
- Remove the front bumper.
- Move the lock carrier into the service position. Radiator Support
Wear protective goggles.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the ATF pipes from the thermostat - 2 -.
- Seal off the ATF pipes and thermostat with clean plugs.
- Remove the ATF pipes from/to ATF cooler on the thermostat - 2 -. Counter-hold at the thermostat.
- Seal off the ATF pipes and thermostat with clean plugs.
- Loosen the clips - arrow - from the condenser - 1 - and ATF cooler- 2 -.
- Remove the ATF cooler and pipes.
- Remove the ATF pipes from the ATF cooler. Counter-hold at the ATF cooler.
- Seal off the ATF pipes and the ATF cooler with clean plugs.
- Remove the bolt on the ATF pipe bracket to the right side of the engine.
• Place a clean cloth under the separating point to catch the escaping ATF.
• Pay attention to the rules of cleanliness when working on an automatic transmission. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
- Remove the bolts - 1, 2 and 3 - and pull the ATF pipes off the transmission.
• Depending on the date of manufacture, the ATF pre-heater and the bolts - 2 - are not attached to the top of the transmission.
- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• Tightening specifications, refer to => [ ATF Pipes, ATF Cooler and ATF Pre-Heater Overview ] Description and Operation.
• Install the ATF pipes for the ATF cooler with clamping connections. Refer to => [ ATF Pipes for ATF Cooler with Clamping Connections ] ATF Pipes For ATF Cooler With Clamping Connections.
- Replace the O-rings and coat them with ATF.
- Remove the plug and insert the ATF pipes all the way into the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts - 1, 2 and 3 -.
• Depending on the date of manufacture, the ATF pre-heater and the bolts - 2 - are not attached to the top of the transmission.
- Tighten the bolt on the ATF pipe bracket to the right side of the engine.
- Install the condenser - 1 - and ATF cooler - 2 -.
- Install the clips - arrow -.
- Remove the plugs, insert the ATF pipes all the way into the thermostat - 2 - and then tighten the bolt - 1 -.
- ATF level, checking and filling. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.
- Check the ATF pipe connections for leaks while checking the ATF level.
- Install the lock carrier.
- Install the front bumper.
- Install the front noise insulation.
