Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Bits (T10099) or Bits (T10099/1)
• Wheel Hub Support (T10149)
Removing
Affects Vehicles with Air Suspension
- Place vehicle on hoist => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Perform system vent using vehicle diagnostic tester. Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.
Affects All Vehicles
- Remove the wheel.
- In vehicles with level control system sensor, remove nut - 2 -.
- Remove the bolt - 2 -.
- Disconnect driveshaft from rear final drive. Use (T10099) or (T10099/1) to loosen bolts - 3 -.
- Remove connector nut - 4 -.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.
- Install (T10149) with wheel bolt on wheel hub.
- Support wheel bearing housing over (T10149) with (V.A.G 1383 A).
• Do not lift or lower vehicle with engine/transmission jack below vehicle.
• Do not leave (V.A.G 1383 A) below vehicle any longer than necessary.
- Remove the bolt - 1 -.
- Do not lower wheel bearing housing using (V.A.G 1383 A) more than is necessary.
- Remove bolt - 4 - and remove connecting link.
• When removing bolt - 4 -, ensure drive axle boots are not damaged.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, with special attention to the following:
• Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension screws when vehicle is in curb weight or control position.
• Wheel bearing, lifting to curb weight position on vehicles with coil springs. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles with Coil Spring ] Wheel Bearing In Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles With Coil Spring
• Wheel bearing, lifting to control position on vehicles with air suspension. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension ] Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Subframe, Stabilizer Bar and Coupling Rod Overview ] Front Axle Overview
- On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Tighten the wheels.
- Adapt control position again on vehicles with air spring suspension => [ Control Position, Programming ] Programming and Relearning.
- On vehicles with automatic headlamp range control system, perform a basic setting on the headlamps.
