Steering Gear: Description and Operation






Generation II and III Steering Gear Differences

Generation I steering gear was installed at start of production (SOP) on the Audi A3 from MY 04. This was replaced in MY 2004 with steering gear (Generation II). Vehicles equipped with Generation I steering gear can be converted to Generation II.

Generation II steering gear was replaced by the Generation III steering gear in MY 08. Vehicles equipped with Generation II steering gear can be converted to Generation III. Refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

When converting from Generation II steering gear to Generation III, the electrical wire must also be replaced => [ Electrical Wiring ] Steering Gear Overview, Generation I and II.

The steering gear can be identified when installed by the number of bolts.

- Raise the vehicle.






The illustration shows the Generation II steering gear.

The Generation II steering gear is secured to the subframe with four bolts - 8 -.

The Generation III steering gear is secured to the subframe with three bolts - 8 -. The clamp - 9 -.

The Generation III steering gear is only secured to the right of the subframe with one bolt - 5 -. The clamp - 1 -, rubber bushing - 2 - and bracket - 3 - are also not used.

The Generation III steering gear is repaired and serviced the same way as the Generation II steering gear.
