ATF, Checking Level and Correcting
ATF, Checking Level and Correcting
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle Diagnosis Tester, for example, Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
• Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Adapter for Filling ATF (VAS 6262 A)
• ATF Filling Adapter (VAS 6262/5)
• Original 1 liter container
• Protective goggles
Test Conditions
• The transmission must not be in the emergency running
• Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
• The selector level is in P.
• The parking brake button should be activated to set the electromechanical parking brake.
• Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
• The A/C and the heater are off.
• Vehicle diagnosis tester is connected.
• The ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F) at the beginning of the test. The transmission must cool down first if the temperature is higher.
• Read the ATF temperature on the vehicle diagnosis tester.
• The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF.
• It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.
• It is possible to underfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.
• Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
Procedure
- Select the following menu entries on the vehicle diagnosis tester in Guided Functions:
• 02-Transmission Electronics 0BK I J217
• 02-Read Measured Values
- Select the measured value Transmission Fluid Temperature on the vehicle diagnosis tester from the list.
- Check the ATF temperature.
ATF, Checking Level and Correcting
• Tightening specification, refer to => [ Transmission Drain and Inspection Plug Overview ] Transmission Drain and Inspection Plug Overview.
• The ATF level is checked at the ATF check and fill hole.
• The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection and fill opening (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature between 35 °C (95 °F) and 45 °C (113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F)).
• Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
There is a risk of damaging the transmission.
• Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0BK.
• Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.
• For the correct allocation, refer to the electronic parts catalog ETKA.
• The ATF filler adapter must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other oils.
- Secure the ATF container and the (VAS 6262 A) on the vehicle as high as possible; for the correct ATF specification, refer to the electronic parts catalog ETKA.
There is a risk of damaging the transmission.
• Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss.
• In this case, pre-filling is necessary. Refer to => [ ATF, Draining or Filling after Repair ] ATF, Draining or Filling After Repair.
- Remove the rear noise insulation - 2 -.
- Start the engine with the selector lever in P.
- While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions (P, R, N, D, S) leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.
- Move the selector lever into P.
- Run the engine at idle.
- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
• Wear protective goggles.
- When the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the plug - arrow A - and drain any excess ATF.
• If the ATF starts to leak out of the ATF check and fill hole - arrow A - before it reaches 40 °C (104 °F), then the ATF level is OK.
• The ATF check and fill hole must be sealed off again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for hot climate countries).
- Tighten the new plug for the ATF check and fill hole. The ATF level test is now completed.
- Install the noise insulation.
• If no ATF leaks out of the ATF check and fill hole - arrow A - before the ATF reaches 40 °C (104 °F):
Filling the ATF
• The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.
- Install the (VAS 6262/5) into the ATF check and fill hole - arrow -.
- Fill the ATF using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out of the check and fill hole.
• Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.
- Tighten the new plug - arrow A -. The ATF level test is now completed.
- Install the noise insulation.
