Torque Converter Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Extractor Lever (VW 681)
• Thrust Piece (3295)
Removing
• Transmission removed, refer to one of the following:
• 3.0L TDI engine, refer to => [ Transmission, Removing ] Transmission, Removing.
• 4.3L FSI engine, refer to => [ Transmission ] Transmission.
- Carefully remove the torque converter.
- Insert the (VW 681) directly behind the sealing lip of the seal, so that the contact ring which is behind it is not damaged.
- Remove the torque converter shaft seal using (VW 681).
Installing
- lubricate the outer circumference and sealing lips of the seal with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
• Installed position: The open side of the shaft seal faces the transmission.
- Using (3295), drive in the torque converter shaft seal until the (3295) is seated.
• If not present, install the additional covers - items 3 through 8 -=> [ Covers ] Description and Operation for the torque converter bellhousing. These covers prevent dust and dirt from getting into the torque converter bellhousing and the torque converter seal from leaking.
