Transmission, Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine Support Bridge (10 - 222 A)

Bracket with Spindle and Hook (10 - 222 A/10)

Adapters (10 - 222 A/19)

Bracket (30 - 211 A)

Transmission Support (3282)

Adjustment Plate (3282/49)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383A)

Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)

Procedure

- Remove the left and right front wheels.

- Remove the particulate filter.





- Remove the primary catalytic converter.





- Remove the left rear coolant pipe from the transmission.





- Loosen the air guide hose clamps - arrows - and remove the hose.





- Remove the air filter housing.





- Remove the left front wheel housing liner.





- Remove the nuts and bolts - arrows - from the refrigerant line clamps.





When the fasteners are loosened, the coolant lines may be moved aside slightly to position the (10-222 A/19) on the longitudinal members.

- Install the (10-222 A) with the (T40091/3) and 2 spindles on the fender bolting edge.





Spindles are at the front.

- Engage the hooks on both spindles at both engine rear lifting eyes.

- Install the remaining parts of the (10-222 A) as illustrated. Mount the (10-222 A/19) on the notches on the longitudinal member.





- Slide the (T40091/2) with the (T40093/5) into both (T40093/4).

Secure the (T40091/2) with the (T40093/4) pins and splints.

- Engage the hooks on the short (10-222 A/10) at the right front engine lifting eye.

- Lightly tension the engine by tightening the 3 spindles evenly.

Only tension the engine, do not lift.

- Remove the rear driveshaft.





- Remove the transfer case.





- Remove the bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove the selector lever cable heat shield.





- Remove the ball head - 2 - on the selector lever cable from the selector lever shaft using (80 - 200).





- Remove the clip - 1 - and the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Do not bend the selector lever cable.

- Remove the bolts - 2 - and remove the selector cable bracket.





- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the strap for the primary catalytic converter.





- Disconnect the connector - arrow - for the engine speed sensor (G28) from the bracket and disconnect it.





- Disconnect the connectors - 1 through 3 -.





Place a cloth under the separation point to collect any leaking Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and the ATF pipes from the transmission.

- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).

- Remove the generator.

- Remove the starter.





- Assemble the (T40058) as follows:





The large diameter - arrow 1 - faces the engine.

The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces the adapter.

- Counter hold the crankshaft using (T40058) and loosen the torque converter bolts.





Danger of the camshaft timing chain jumping off.

Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation - arrow -.

- If equipped, remove the cover - arrow -.





- Remove the 6 torque converter bolts - arrow - through the opening for the starter; to do this, rotate the crankshaft 120° in the direction of engine rotation.





- Remove the engine/transmission bolts - 3 through 6 - and - 8 through 10 -.





Bolt - 7 - remains installed hand tight.

- Install the (3282) onto the (V.A.G 1383 A).





- Lay the (3282/49) on the (3282) as illustrated.

- Align the arms on the (3282) with the holes in the (3282/49).

- Attach the support elements on the (3282/49) as illustrated.

- Guide the (V.A.G 1383 A) with the (3282) under the transmission.

The arrow symbol on the (3282/49) points in the direction of travel.

- Align the (3282/49) so that it is parallel to the transmission.

- Secure the mount to the threaded hole at the back of the transmission with an M10 x 20 bolt - arrow -.

- Position the side mounts on the left and right in the oil pan notch as shown in illustration.





- Lift the transmission slightly.

- Remove the last bolt between the engine and transmission.

- Press the transmission off of the engine while pressing the torque converter off of the drive plate - arrow -.





- Carefully lower the transmission using the (V.A.G 1383 A).

- Secure the torque converter in the transmission against falling out using (30 - 211 A).
