The right transmission support is secured to the self-locking center differential cover with a bolt. This bolt must be removed. The transmission support must not be removed completely, however, all steps for removing the transmission support must be followed in order to remove the cover (for example driveshaft must be disconnected and tied up to the side, rear of transmission must be lowered (=> [ Rear Transmission Support and Transmission Mount ] Rear Transmission Support and Transmission Mount).

- Remove the right transmission support from the self-locking center differential cover.

- Place (V.A.G 1782) beneath transmission.

Wear protective eyewear.

- Loosen and remove cover bolts opposite the tightening sequence.

- Drain the ATF.

Carefully remove the self-locking center differential cover from the transmission toward the rear.

Otherwise, the self-locking center differential can fall out of the transmission.

- Secure the self-locking center differential from falling out or pull it rearward and off from the output shaft.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.

If the shim has accidentally fallen out:

- Clean the shim, lubricate with gear oil and insert into transmission.

The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.

- O-ring on transfer case cover, removing and installing
