Self-Locking Center Differential






Self-Locking Center Differential

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Carrier Bearing Inst. Tool (3350)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Bolt M12x100 with nut

Removing

The removal and installation is described on a vehicle with 10-cylinder FSI engine. FSI engine description.

- Loosen quick-release connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove noise insulation.





- Remove the left Y-pipe.

- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - A - - arrows -.





- Remove bolts on transmission/driveshaft connection.

- Slide driveshaft back to rear final drive and together; the CV joints can slide axially.

- Remove bolt - arrow - at right exhaust tract strap.





- Remove the bracket from the tunnel crossmember - arrow -.





- Remove the bracket for oxygen sensor connectors - 1 - and - 2 - from the tunnel crossmember - arrows -.





The connectors remain connected.

- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove the tunnel crossmember.

- Support the engine carrier and subframe with the (V.A.G 1383 A) as illustrated.





- Remove the transmission mount bolts - 3 -.





- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and carefully lower the subframe with (V.A.G 1383 A).

- Remove the bolt - arrow - at the back of the right transmission support.





- Place old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) beneath transmission.






The self-locking center differential can fall out of the transmission when its cover is removed.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - on the self-locking center differential cover in a diagonal sequence.

- Allow escaping oil to drain into the (V.A.G 1782).

- Slowly and carefully remove the cover together with self-locking center differential from transmission.

Installing

Install a new ball bearing if the self-locking center differential is replaced.

- Install the ball bearing - 2 - all the way onto the self-locking center differential - 1 - under shop press with (3350).





- Press bearing race - 1 - as far as stop into front final drive intermediate flange.





- Check installation depth of bearing race with a depth gauge.

- a - = approximately 9 mm

If dimension - a - is noticeably smaller, the bearing race has slipped.

- Remove bearing race and check it for correct installation position.

The tabs on the rear side of the bearing race must engage in the corresponding cut-outs on the front final drive intermediate flange.

- Check whether shim - 1 - is still inserted.





- Replace the rear flange shaft seal. Refer to => [ Rear Flange Shaft Seal ] Rear Flange Shaft Seal.

- Install the self-locking center differential - arrow - on input shaft splines, rotate slightly.





- Make sure the installed self-locking center differential can be turned by hand.

- Replace the O-ring in self-locking center differential cover.





- Place cover with driveshaft output flange installed on self-locking center differential, rotate driveshaft output flange slightly.

- Tighten the self-locking center differential cover screws in 2 stages as follows:






Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following:

- Fill gear oil in transfer case. Refer to => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Transmissions with Separate Oil System, Checking ] Gear Oil Level In Transfer Case, Transmissions With Separate Oil System, Checking.

Bring transmission into installation position with (V.A.G 1383 A)

- Install the transmission support and transmission mount. Refer to => [ Rear Transmission Support and Transmission Mount ] Rear Transmission Support and Transmission Mount.

- Install the subframe.

- For driveshaft installation, note the proper allocation.

- Install the exhaust system and align it free of tension.
