Fault-Tracing

Fault-tracing TCM-0082

Checking the function

Warning! Ensure that the vehicle is safely raised. Check that no objects are caught in the tire treads.

Caution! On vehicles with four-wheel-drive, the tests should be carried out with the vehicle raised so that all four wheels can rotate freely with attachments far out on the link arms so that the drive shafts are not damaged.

Note! If the vehicle is equipped with TRACS or traction control (STC, DSTC) this function must be deactivated. Remove the fuse for the pump motor for the brake system in the relay/fusebox in the engine compartment. Note that this will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the brake control module (BCM). These diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) must be erased before delivery to the customer.

- Raise the vehicle so that the drive wheels hang freely.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- Put the gear selector in position D so that the drive wheels start to rotate.

Note! Ensure that the wheels are not rotating when the gear selector is moved.

- Read off the gearbox output speed.
Read off the transmission input speed.
If the transmission input speed updates correctly it means that the fault was present previously but is not active now. There is an intermittent fault.
If the transmission input speed does not update correctly it means that the fault is permanent.

-------------------------------------------------

Checking wiring and sensors

- Ignition off
- Disconnect the connector for the transmission.
- Transmission control module (TCM) disconnected.
- Check connector B (22-pin) for the transmission control module (TCM). Check for damaged or pressed in pins. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.

Hint: Check the transmission speed sensor. See: Checking internal components of the transmission Checking Internal Components of the Transmission

If any incorrect value was measured in the test above, open the transmission's control system and troubleshoot cables and component for open circuit or short-circuit to voltage.
The transmission’s speed sensor for the outgoing speed is located internally in the transmission. The transmission should be replaced if a sensor fault is established.
Remedy as necessary.

1 - Resetting the adaptation and oil quality counter

2 - Resetting the oil counter

-------------------------------------------------

Resetting the oil counter

Resetting the counter for Transmission oil, change

Resetting the counter for Transmission oil, change

Hint: The transmission control module (TCM) has a counter for the oil's quality that counts up when the transmission is exposed to very heavy loads or high ambient temperature. If the counter is not reset when draining/changing oil, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code may be generated under incorrect conditions. That is why it is important that the counter for Transmission oil, change is reset.

Note! This only applies when the transmission oil is changed and when the oil is changed during repairs to the transmission's temperature sensor.

- Ignition on
Activate reset of the counter by clicking on the symbol for VCT2000.

Verification

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

Caution! On vehicles with four-wheel-drive, the tests should be carried out with the vehicle raised so that all four wheels can rotate freely with attachments far out on the link arms so that the drive shafts are not damaged.

Warning! Ensure that the vehicle is safely raised. Check that no objects are caught in the tire treads.

Note! If the vehicle is equipped with TRACS (traction control system) or Traction Control (DSTC (Dynamic stability and traction control), STC (Stability and traction control)) the function must be deactivated. This is carried out by removing the fuse for the brake system pump motor in the engine compartment relay and fusebox. Note that diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) will be stored in the brake control module (BCM). These must be erased before returning the vehicle to the customer.

- Ignition off
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.

Check that the speed is updated.

Note! Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may be stored in the brake control module (BCM) when the rear wheels are stationary and the front wheels rotate. Erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) after fault-tracing.

Resetting the adaptation and oil quality counter

Resetting adaptation

Resetting adaptation and counter for "Transmission oil, changing"

Hint: The transmission has torque-controlled, adaptive pressure control. The pressure control means that the transmission itself controls the pressure during each shift sequence in order to avoid harsh shifting. Each shift is assessed by the transmission control module (TCM) and is stored in the internal memory, which results in compensation for wear in the transmission and clutch. In order for the transmission to function correctly after repair, it is important to reset the adaptation in the memory. Since the oil is changed during the repair, the counter for "Transmission oil, change" shall also be reset. If the counter is not reset when draining/changing oil, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code may be generated under incorrect conditions.

Note! This applies only if the transmission or one of the components in the transmission have been replaced.

- Ignition on
Activate reset of the adaptation and the counter by clicking on the symbol for VCT2000.
