Preparatory work
Removing the battery and air cleaner (ACL) module
Remove:
- the battery. See: Battery Removal and Replacement
- the battery shelf
- the air cleaner (ACL) module. See: Air filter module, B5254T7 Service and Repair (B5254Tx) or Air filter module, B5254T7 Service and Repair (B5244Sx).
Removal
Removing the left-hand engine pad
Remove the left-hand engine pad. See: Engine support insulator left, B5254T7 Engine Support Insulator Left.
Removing the gear selector cables from the transmission
Caution! When working with the mechanical cables/casings ensure that the cable sleeves do not crack or break.
Remove:
- the mechanical shift cables from the levers. Use: 999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar
- the mechanical cables from the bracket by moving the sleeves back on the cables.
Tie up the cables.
Remove the cable from the back-up lamp switch.
Removing the gear shift lever
Note! When removing the gear selector, the lever must be in neutral (center position).
Remove:
- the bleed valve. Tap the pin out of the gear selector lever. Lift the gear selector lever off the shaft
- the 4 screws in the gear selector cover.
Removing the gear selector
Pry off the cover. Use the 3 lugs on the cover.
Position a drift through the hole on the gear selector shaft. Lift the drift to remove the gear selector from the transmission.
Lift the gear selector while sliding it forwards.
Thoroughly clean the mating surface on the transmission.
Position: 999 5724 Cover 999 5724 Cover (the hole pattern on the cover must be adjusted slightly) on the transaxle.
Installation

Installing the gear selector
Check that the mating surfaces are completely clean. Check that there is no grease on the transmission and gear selector.
Apply a thin layer of liquid gasket (P/N 116 1409-6 (333 ml)) to the mating surface on the transmission.
Check that the gear selector is in neutral.
Position a drift through the hole on the gear selector shaft. Use the drift to install the gear selector in the transmission.
Position the gear selector in the transmission.
Carefully check that the gear selector cover is in contact with the transmission.
Install:
- loosely tighten the 4 M8 screws to the brackets. First tighten crosswise. Tighten
- the gear selector lever on the shaft using the pin
- the bleed valve.
Installing the gear selector cables
Install:
- the cable for the back-up lamp switch
- the cables in the bracket.
Press the ball joints on the cables on to the levers by hand.
Adjust the transmission cable. See: Transmission cable, adjusting, B5254T7, M66 Adjustments.
Installing engine compartment components
Install:
- the air cleaner (ACL) housing to the intake manifold and connections
- the valve on the air cleaner (ACL) housing
- the fresh air intake hose.
Installing the left-hand engine pad
Install the left-hand engine pad in accordance with: Engine support insulator left, B5254T7 Engine Support Insulator Left.
Finishing
Installing the air cleaner module and battery
Install:
- the air cleaner (ACL) module. See: Air filter module, B5254T7 Service and Repair (B5254Tx) or Air filter module, B5254T7 Service and Repair (B5244Sx).
- the battery. See: Battery Removal and Replacement
- the battery shelf.
